So if someone doesn't say that a player is 'elite', does that mean they think they are shit? I thought their might have been some categories in between like good, very good, OK, solid, reasonable, accomplished etc.
I agree Hindy that the term 'elite' should only apply to 3-5 max. As good as he is it is easy to see how Lyon might not make that list.
You were probably in a rush to your local Mensa meeting to correct basic grammar in this post.
True - those top 50 players lists are largely redundant.
I suppose it will always be subjective no matter how you categorise it. Even if you put Hayne in the 'elite' category there would be someone on here (probably IFREAK) who would argue that he is 'very elite'.
Poo poo in his post, referred to gasnier as the last of the elite centres, not elite players. I don't think gasnier was ever top five players in the world, but that's another story.
Elite doesn't necessarily mean 'top five' either. Deciding how many players fit within a given category is somewhat arbitrary, and given to change from era to era.
So I consider Gasnier to have been part of the 'elite' player group when he was at his peak, whether that group consisted of five players, or three or ten. It's also just my opinion so feel free to disagree.
I wasn't the first to mention elite as being the top five players, and nor do I agree with it. You did mention gasnier as an elite centre, that I agree with, but overall I don't think he was top four or five players in the world at any given time.
In regard to Lyon, I rate him the best centre in the game. An absolute freak, represented his state and country at a very young age, played in grand finals wherever he went and won numerous awards here and abroad. Very rarely breaks down with injury, a tough competitor with leadership skills and a never die attitude.
Physically he doesn't match up to the game's best centres. Sure he's got great footy brains, and he can kick and pass well (for an outside back), but he's not playing in the halves, and one-on-one he's just not good enough to be considered elite.
He's smart not to have played Origin these past few years because Inglis would have run over the top of him.
Well, I'm sorry, but I don't agree with any of that.

Oh, when all else fails, pull out the grammar or spelling line. You got me.
Wanna go down to the local houso estate and score a few roots????
Lyon played in the halves in England and won off memory two man of steel awards. Does that count?
He's also played five-eight for Manly on a number of occasions.
but surely not having one iota of evidence (other than not playing in the halves) of anything stated being correct should be enough to change your mind
