So, a move to Melbourne has been finalised (offered a job there) and I'm wondering what's the NRL coverage like over there? Are all games live? I ask cause I remember seeing complaints in the past about delayed coverage or none at all in Melbourne? Never took notice before cause I didn't care but now that will soon apply to me!

People of Melbourne let me know whats doing??

welcome to the best town* in australia! :)

channel 9 games are on GEM, the same time as they are in other states on 9...

so friday games at 7.30 & 9.30, sunday game at 4pm.

for the others you'll need foxtel, just like you would in any other state..

*aside from their sporting preference..

Yeah, after years of denial by Channel 9 Melbourne and thousands of calls, letters and emails later the ratings and value of the rights meant they simply couldn't pretend anymore.

Gallops leadership was weak and they were allowed to avoid their obligations.
The new Independent Commission put a stop the that.

EDIT: The NRL digital pass is also fantastic if you were considering Foxtel purely for NRL.

the only difference regarding FTA games, is that in NSW and QLD, the games are live on both channel 9's primary station and in reverse order on Gem, so you can choose which game you want to see first.

In Melbourne, you don't have that option, you have to settle with whatever is on the primary channel in NSW and QLD.

The Footy Show is also on after midnight, which is a nice bonus to counter the friday night inflexibility.

Other than that, don't buy newspapers, just read smh online.

otherwise you'll be inundated with AFL fapping.

People will ask you what footy team you follow, if you say you follow NRL, they will say some dumb shit like "Oh you follow Rugby" or if they think they're funny, they'll call NRL players "Shirtlifters" which is hilarious beyond belief.

I tend to find that if you don't talk about 'footy' of any code, you'll find that Melbourne people actually aren't too bad, aside from the elitist attitude many of them have.

Asking someone what footy team they follow is a bit of a tradition, it normally comes out straight after pleased to meet you, most Victorians wouldn't really care if you named an NRL team, most would just say so you're from Sydney-Brisbane? Of course there's the dickhead element, but the NRL states have their fair share of those as well.

I'd rather talk to a fan of a rival code than a motor sports fan, how they can watch that shit is beyond belief, and most of em are incapable of discussing anything else.

The TV guide online says that the Antiques Roadshow is on 7:30 tonight... isn't it mean to be the QLD game (Broncos vs Roosters)?

Oh yes I'm looking forward to seeing first hand the AFL wankfest. I'll be used to it since I come from yawnion land so it wouldn't be weird to not have the NRL 'up there'.

All of this and more...been here for 13 years and they still pull out the old "bum sniffers" line in reference to NRL.

Also no schooners here...only pots or pints. Good pubs in Richmond which is close to AAMI park.

The papers are full of AFL crap...don't buy them.

Yes, someone with some knowledge of best places to watch games etc will be most helpful once I'm there. Looking forward to watching a few games at AAMI park too.

And this foxtel set up, how much am I looking at per month? basic package plus movies packages, to keep the kids and wife happy.:lol:

It cost a shit load, but you will pay it if you really want to watch every game. I think I pay 70 something a month, basic package, sport and maybe something else.

After some years of living in Melbourne my experience is vary different. Most of the people I have met over the years have not mentioned sport at all at the beginnings of conversation. Your notion of 'it normally comes out straight after pleased to meet you' is overstated at best and downright ridiculous at worst.

If make your opinion forthright as I am, people will realise that they will get nowhere if they try to denigrate me about my sport of choice. It would be their loss. All I say regarding ozzie rules is 'I did not grow up with it and never really got into it, though I realise it is a big deal in Melbourne'.

My friends now discuss with me thoughts on Rugby League. I have found the so called nastiness towards the game to be very overstated. Now that RL games are broadcast down herelive on Friday nights often people will flick between the two different games, depending on which is closer/better.

The Melbourne people of real life are not like the bigpoofy/theroar/TFC basketcases we see on the net. Also, there are many kiwis and ex-northerners who live down here also who you can talk real footy with at any time.

games are not shown on GEM in NSW and Queensland. they are only shown on the primary channel

no idea where you get this bs about games being in reverse order on GEM from :?

Thought that was a random post, acres of posts on LU about the Broncos playing every Fri night and all you have do is change a channel to watch the other game??

Also it's not called AAMI anymore, it's the far more easier to say Melbourne Rectangular Stadium!
