Cronulla Sharks slam NRL over poor handling of women’s com

Paul Quigs on 360 has reported that both Souths and Cronulla told the nrl that there is no money to be generated in the womens league. Both these clubs have done more for the womens game than any other clubs and both the Roosters and St.George leagues clubs are paying for their teams to be in the comp. Thats how they got the licenses

I took a slightly different message out of it BBB. I may have it wrong but the Rorters and Dragons clubs agreed to underwrite their involvement. So my guess is they'd be required to tip dough in to cover the losses associated with their involvement on the proviso that the comp makes a loss as expected. Souffs and the Sharkies stood their ground and said we want a well run solid competition, which isn't the model that the NRL were presenting, but could be if they adopted a model that the Sharkies and Souffs had developed through experience. Seriously, is that how the NRL do business?

The NRL didn’t like to be told what to do, so they take their bat & ball (& sandpaper) & go home.

I have a slightly different take to BBB and Vin.

Roosters
  • They finance NRL Headquarters, so it would make sense they received a licence straight up.
  • It is also important to have a "cock" (Roosters Emblem) in the ladies competition.
  • The logical choice for geographical coverage - one of the selection criteria confirmed by TG.
Dragons
  • They represent the female fan base with a Red V.
  • The NRL have created a Coaching pathway for Paul McGregor once the Dragons hit their usual end of season slump.
Sharks
  • Our girls were a genuine shot at annihilating St Georges 11 Premierships in a row so the NRL couldn't allow it.
  • The decision still may be overturned in our favour - I have sent a photo of the Cronulla Mermaids to Peter Beattie pleading to let the girls play in the comp.

Russell Crowe on warpath with NRL over Rabbitohs exclusion from new women’s competition
MARCH 29, 2018RUSSELL Crowe has slammed the NRL as “ignorant” while revealing South Sydney are demanding answers from boss Todd Greenberg as to why they were overlooked for an historic women’s league team licence.

In the wake of the NRL’s controversial and shock decision to reject the Rabbitohs and Cronulla - two leaders in the growth and promotion of the women’s game - from the new NRL women’s competition, Crowe has weighed into the widespread confusion over the decision with all of his Hollywood muscle.

Having understood that Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly had described the entire process of licence inclusion “shambolic”, Crowe said Souths had already moved to request answers from the NRL.

“The club is waiting for the NRL to clarify its decision making process,’’ Crowe told The Daily Telegraph, in a statement.

Rabbitohs owner Russell Crowe has lashed out at the NRL over its handling of the women’s competition.
“We have reasons to believe that ours was infact the best and most developed proposal put forward and we are dismayed and bewildered they have chosen to exclude us and ignore the years of work and the achievements to date of the team that would have represented us .

“It’s a pointless, ignorant step to exclude us as a club and put South Sydney women on the back burner.’’

It was on Tuesday that the NRL announced the Sydney Roosters, St George-Illawarra, New Zealand and Brisbane had won the right to be part of a four team inaugural women’s competiton.

Even with the benefit of 24-hours to consider the NRL’s decision to block the Rabbitohs and Sharks from entering the competition, former Jillaroo Allana Ferguson said it continued to defy belief.

The launch of the women’s competition was overshadowed by anger from the Rabbitohs and Sharks. Picture: Brett Costello
“With the global ground swell of womens sport and the pathway female league player have laid over decades, the time for a bold action was seen and taken,’’ Ferguson said.

“The Sharks promotion of the women’s league encouraged the games bureaucrats to take notice.

“While I recognise that decisions were made based on geographic locations, the exclusion of some clubs defies belief.

“The Cronulla Sharks have the established framework while South Sydney have the proven capacity to historically develop top level female Rugby League teams.’’

Crowe’s vocal response to his club’s major blow also emerged as over 5,000 people - and counting - have signed a petition for the NRL to produce an extraordinary backflip and grant Cronulla a women’s league team licence.

The Sharks were also dudded and even had a major jersey sponsor ready to go.
Beth Barclay took to change.org on Wednesday, commencing a petition called “The Cronulla Sharks Women’s team to be included in the NRL.’’

“Hearing the news that the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks Football Club Women’s League will not be entered the NRL has outraged fans far and wide,’’ Barclay wrote.

“The Sharks Women’s League have been in the frontline in promoting Women in League with their football team as well as hosting the Women’s World Cup at Shark Park in 2017.

“Please sign and share to show your support to the Sharks Women and show the NRL how passionate we are about our team and we should be included in the NRL.’’

This was posted by former(possibly still current?) souths juniors board member Frank Cookson on his Facebook page. Very well written I thought:

“Well our cricketers have been playing with the ball and our first graders are at last learning how to play the ball, something bad and something good, enough said.

What was thought would be six teams in the NRL Women’s inaugural competition has been reduced to four, with South’s and Cronulla being excluded, which seems yet another idiotic decision by the NRL hierarchy. The usual garble from Mr. Greenberg about six very good bids etc., etc., etc., and indicating the decision was based after “consultation” with the elite women players. All that can be concluded from this is the NRL decision makers and elite women do not consider there are enough good players to make up six quality teams.

Let us dissect this, both Cronulla and South’s have junior female competitions, pathway competition teams all the way to the top and five and four international players respectively, yet they are excluded. Admittedly the new game has to crawl before it walks but with the number of internationals included in the two teams “given the axe” as well as others bordering on that level plus up and comers surely there are enough high level players available to fill six quality teams.

Obviously both South’s and Cronulla had high expectations of their teams being accepted into this Competition and one could be excused for thinking with it even being reduced to four they would still be justifiably qualified. I read Cronulla missed out because of their “Geographical spread,” what an absolute joke, even for the NRL. I don’t know the reasons for South’s exclusion.

Like South’s Cronulla has the lot, numbers, quality players, sponsors outstanding Marketing/Promotion for such a Competition yet they still “get the chop.”
Well Mr. Beattie you said the game was going to be transparent so here is your chance to be so, tell us the real reasons for the exclusion of Cronulla and South’s and also why the number of participating teams has been reduced from an expected six to four.”

Great to see Allana speak out, because she has retired she doesn't have to toe the party line like the rest of them.

Over 7000 have now signed that petition.
As much as it probably won't change the minds of the dweeble NRL, at least it shows the character and strength of the club and its supporters.
The Rooters wouldn't have even had anyone start a petition let alone anyone care.
