We have be careful not to water down the minimum wage. No way would I screw down quotes just to save a few bucks. Fair days work for a fair days pay etc.

Then again my plumber who charged me $360/h for the first hour then $180/h + then charges use of his tools on top of that (water jet/eel to unblock pipes) thereafter needs to get a reality check. I saw a (med) specialist last week who charged less.

He ripped you off though.
Most guys I know working for self as sparkies stick around $75.

Yep.
My plumber (who has 4 employees) charges $90/hr and no call out fee.
Depending on the location, he might charge a bit of travel time.
Pretty fair I reckon.

$180/hr?? FMD!!

Oh I wasn't talking about Airtasker. Just in general. I mean we need to pay for the baby boomers to take their caravans around Australia somehow and drink champas at Ayers rock as the sun goes down.
Easiest way is immigration from poor nations so we can pay them min wage of about $20 hr....
Unemployment is at 5%. Even if it was higher there are too many picky AUS merkins who think that is beneath them (when it isn't).

Our lack of wage growth is the direct result of the immigration hindy111 is talking about.

And, no, Gronk, this isn't a racisms post ;) Last year, population growth outstripped economic growth, so we're having what is called a "per capita recession" - basically, the economy grew, but population grew by more, so that means each slice of the pie actually shrunk.

That's why the RBA dropped the cash rate last month and may very well do so again today. Problem there is that, if they do, they only have 1% left to cut further.

Unemployment looks like it could be ticking up, too, so that 1% is looking like it might not be enough over the next 12 months. Some economists are seriously putting our future cash rate at 0.25%. That's incredibly scary.

We need to cut immigration over the next 24 months to put pressure on the labour market, bring unemployment back down and push something into wage growth.

Sounds good. Get it done HJ.

Are you going to drive around Australia in your camper van and drink champsas at sunset looking at Ayers rock whilst collecting the pension you worked hard for?
If so we need to collect/catch more poor people from poor countries to work poor paying jobs.
Then the camper van dream stays alive. Yay

Well that's not what RBA Governor Philip Lowe thinks.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-09...big-difference-in-unemployment-wages/10243828

However, the RBA and Dr Lowe are unabashed supporters of high population growth.

As the population clock ticked over 25 million last Month, Dr Lowe made a strong defence of immigrationbullet-proofing the economy.

"This is an important difference, with Australia's faster population growth being one of the reasons our economy has experienced higher average growth than many other advanced economies," Dr Lowe said.

So while the dip in the utilisation rate may indicate the jobs market is finally making some headway in dealing with a growing population, the state of Australia's crowded roads, public transport, hospitals and schools would tend to indicate public policy still isn't.

==================

Australia has a skills based immigration policy, which makes it very much a moveable feast. We can turn the dial and aim our immigration at an area where jobs are hard to fill.

https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/working-in-australia/skill-occupation-list

I think it's naive to think that immigration is the silver bullet to jobs growth. In his last speech in June the RBA Governor implored the Morrison Government to ramp up infrastructure spending.

One option is for fiscal support, including through spending on infrastructure. This spending not only adds to demand in the economy, but it also adds to the economy's productive capacity. So it works on both the demand and supply side.

Another option is structural policies that support firms expanding, investing, innovating and employing people.

On the upside, immigration is also keeping real estate from crashing (and therefore keeping it unaffordable) so we don't need to invest our money in anything useful.

Immigration has also delivered Australia 27 years of uninterrupted annual economic growth. An achievement never matched in the developed world. Yeah but those houses are pricey.

Would you say the costs and benefits of immigration have been evenly distributed to all Australians?

I can see how I've benefitted from it but there's plenty of Australians who have borne more than their share of the costs while reaping less than their share of the rewards.

Citing the benefits to the collective while pretending we're all equal shareholders is both disingenuous and alienating.
