We have be careful not to water down the minimum wage. No way would I screw down quotes just to save a few bucks. Fair days work for a fair days pay etc.

Then again my plumber who charged me $360/h for the first hour then $180/h + then charges use of his tools on top of that (water jet/eel to unblock pipes) thereafter needs to get a reality check. I saw a (med) specialist last week who charged less.
Well this seems like as good a place to ask this question then.
I’ve been looking to get quite a bit of landscaping done. I’ve gotten a quote of $50k+ (it doesn’t even cover everything I wanted). The total size of the are is around 90sqm and the work is a mix of new retaining walls, replacing old concrete with travertine and some fencing.
My problem is it’s seems a fair bit more than what Google suggests it should be, but getting a landscaper to actually do the work is a f**king nightmare and these guys seem like they’d be reliable.
Is it reasonable?

Without knowing a complete scope of works, it's hard to know whether $50 k's is a fair price to pay.
I'd be asking for references from them for previous customers, and give them a call.
Of course they are going to only to give you names of people who were happy, but those customers could possible give you an insight into how they operate. For example - efficiency, quality, did they do the job in a reasonable time etc...

Almost all my work these days is via word of mouth. It's the best recommendation of all.

It's a hard vs soft landscape thing. I did mostly soft landscaping but having said that it was 100s of plants and many were mature trees. So it ended up quite expensive.

I got a landscape plan + planting plan from a landscape architect and was able to easily get quotes from landscapers all over the metro area as could just email it out. I ended up using a merkin who lives a few streets away.

Why not get 3 or 4 quotes?
Ask about type of materials and quality. Some cheaper places may use inferior products.

Yeah I know without details it’s hard to say but I’m not going to give too much because I know one of the guys is an Eels fan. He may be on here and I don’t want to sound like I’m price scoping behind their backs. Basically is $50k within range for size of area? Entirely hard landscaping.
The actual quote I got was light on details as it is. But again I’m not really going to haggle over quote details when just getting a quote has been such an outlandishly painful experience

100% hard landscaping. Plants and what not I can definitely do myself (plus not much room for them anyway)

I’ve gotten several quotes. One guy I accepted then he refused to get back to me, then eventually said he didn’t have time (code for found a better paying job).
Another guy never sent me quote and came up with bullshit reasons for the delay.
Another (that was referred by a professional partner no less) got back to me to refusing any quoting at that time, despite me saying I could purchase all the materials now and basically all they would have to quote on is time. The referee heard all about that one and I don’t know what the outcome on that relationship was.
Others haven’t bothered showing up

Mmmm, that's interesting that the quote was light on detail considering it's a $50 k price tag. For a landscaping job of approx 90 m2, I would be expecting as much detail as possible tbh. When you're spending that amount of money you expect to be informed of absolutely everything that is included, and what's possibly not included
90 m2 isn't that large an area.
Happy for you to PM me more details of the quote or even email it to me. I'm happy to pass on some professional advice to a fellow Eels fan.
As I said, I know very little about the detail of your quote or scope of works so it's a bit difficult to give you some considered advice at this stage.
