Salary Cap Effectiveness

From our original 2012 Top 4 finish, there are only 4 players who remain at the Rabbitohs:

Sam Burgess
Adam Reynolds
John Sutton (retiring)
George Burgess (leaving)

Heck, after this year we'll only have 4 players left from our 2014 premiership team (Alex Johnston, Adam Reynolds, Sam Burgess, Tom Burgess).

That's a pretty big turnover in 5 years. I'd say the salary cap is working fine.

Some clubs are just run better than others.

And how many players will the Roosters lose after they take out another GF?

They have an international backline including 2 of the best centres in the game, the best fullback as well as Cronk and Keary who should've played SOO.

TPA's are supposed to be independent of the club and therefore in theory shouldn't be a deciding factor in signing for one club over the other. (Yes i did type that with a straight face :) ) Melbourne's large amount was probably due to some of the big deals Billy Slater had, he was one of the few players you actually saw in TV adverts.

Yeah...no conflict of interest with News Ltd running several clubs and players getting jobs working for their media companies.

Yobbo did mention their player losses occurred over a five year period post GF. Are you expecting us to lose the same number of players next year?

Before last year’s 2018 success we had Cordner, Friend, Napa, JWH and Toops remaining from our previous premiership in 2013. Similar to Souths in player losses and time frame.

Most of our current guys have 2/3 years left to run on existing contracts. Cronk leaves and Aubusson, Morris, Hargreaves have another year?
We just manage our cap better.

The other thing that will help is relocating the Roosters.
Without the Roosters, players will not be moving between Sydney clubs as much and since the Roosters have already gifted Moore Park and the CBD of Sydney to the Swans...the Swans...what is there to lose in a relocation.
Geez you are a tool

If there was a draft, the fruitloops who make up the majority of the NRL fanbase would somehow convince themselves we're cheating that too.

But lets see how that would pan out anyway, we have a pretty good example...

Gold Coast had cash to spend
They bought themselves the player who they considered to be the best young player available, Ash Taylor
They actually got worse, and tanked his career too

And you people want to give this mob the best young players every year! Surely that's a human rights violation

The titans spent like 500k on Shannon Boyd

You need to have players stop re-siging for the current club for "unders"..

If team A offers 400k for a player team B must match it or better it for that player to re-sign with said club..

This is ultimately what it boils down to. And that isn't the salary caps fault, any measure of trying to even out the competition will see better run clubs succeed more over time.

I think a club junior should count less under the cap and the longer the player stays at the club the less it costs under the cap. It would encourage clubs to nurture their own talent.

It should to be around 14yrs of age or less to count as a junior. The Roosters pluck the sure bets of other clubs at around 16yrs old and then claim them as a Roosters junior.

So virtually the whole Warriors or Broncos squad should be discounted? Yeah, let’s give one town clubs more advantages. Plus there’s still a lot of risk and investment required in a 16 year old

The salary cap gives every club the opportunity to compete.

It's flawed to measure it's effectiveness based on end results.

For example Newcastle have been given the opportunity to turn over their roster, sign big name players and compete in the market.

That is an effective salary cap. The fact that they missed the top 8 this year is down to incompetence of management. Not a failure of the salary cap.

The fact that the Broncos, with a whole city of opportunities in TPAs, player recruitment, sponsorship and lifestyle haven't won a premiership in 13 years tells me that the way a club is run is more important than money alone.

It’s like the cap is completely f**king pointless.

... it’s never been an even playing field, cap or not.
In my life
Manly
Raiders
Broncos
Storm
Roosters

All had almost the full Australia rep team at stages.
And Manly is clearly one of the rich clubs.
Manly managed to bring blokes through their juniors (Watmong, Foran, DCE, Hopoate, Menzies, Matai, the Stewarts) as well as pick up discards (Williams was pulling beers at Parra leagues) while only signing the occasional star. If other clubs want to pay overs to try and buy premierships, they can do so at their peril.
Manly are doing the same now with the Turbos, DCE, Parker, Fainu as well as some promising young blokes coming through alongside discards like Suli and Garrick.

This year half our squad was purchased. We wouldn't gain that much.

Also...more advantages? Lol ok then. Maybe applicable to the Broncos, but we're not even in the same ball park.

In regards to Manly I was talking way before then.

That's just dumb.

All your doing there is forcing players to go to clubs back they don't want to go to.

If I'm a young player at a club - say Papenhuyzen, am I going to want to go to the Gold Coast and win spoons or stay at Melbourne and be successful and take less? Footy is a team game.

Plus, all you do then is get clubs with cap room offering stupid money knowing a player has no intention of joining with the intent to ruin other clubs.

800.00 Cronk *
800.00 Crichton

Adam Blair is on 800.00 too at the warriors. Utterly depressing.

72.50 nobodies

9,065.00 TOTAL
*50k each under veteran allowance for Cronk, Friend, Cordner and Aubusson
Distribute the NRL documented 250k in TPAs as you wish..

Most of the mid-tier paid players in that list 200k-400k, would get double elsewhere. I smell brown paper bags...

Salary cap effect is working, policing it is not. Most breaches are self reported or turn out to be a whoops forgot about that.
This is where the better run clubs are getting away with the minor rip offs.
Sharks got done for a minor breach that a lot of clubs are getting away with(false tpp company).
But it all comes down to money, and the Rooters and Storm can afford the best and as many people in management as they want.
