2025 is WA's year of the Bear. Perth Bears announced, and now Willagee Bears' first premiership. Well done to them. If my Joondalup couldn't win it, I'm happy to see another perennial struggler like Willagee win it.
Only thing perennial strugglers need to do is find the funds to play players twice us much as the other clubs ..... this is no David verse Goliath story.

So if they “brought” the premiership by recruiting the best players. Are they generally considered to be a rich club? If not, where did they get their money from?

Probably best not to comment on that, plenty of speculation going around.

Willagee did bring in union players to our competition and that should be commended.

Ironically those that are cheering for anyone to win outside of Freo/NB don't realise those two clubs pay players significantly less than their competition (outside of Joondalup). What has happened this year with Willagee making big offers to state players are making their clubs less competitive as NB, Freo and SP will be forced to up payments.

This is all a very slippery slope, easy to look back to the 90s growth and forget we lost two very strong 1st Grade clubs in Applecross and Mosman/Cott due to over extending on player payments.

Up to 5 of WA's best juniors are trialing for North Sydney this following w.e. - good luck to all involved.
it's already begun, the assimilation of both hubs. this is great news. redblackbear mentioned almost 6 weeks ago that this would look like happening by years end. good luck to the kids!

Special shoutout to WA's very own Kaylani Tavita!

Kaylani Tavita, who vice-captained the U18 WA Schoolgirls this year will be making her debut for Tonga in the Pacific Championships against the Cook Islands

Head Coach Mal Meninga will lead the Perth Bears recruitment and pathways management team at the NRL WA’s Harmony Cup Nines tournament this weekend in Perth, offering WA players a rare opportunity to showcase their skills.

The three-day event, to be held at the South Perth Lions home ground George Burnett Park will feature senior male and female multi-cultural teams. Perth Bears CEO Anthony De Ceglie and board members will also be in attendance, eagerly scouting future talent.

Meninga emphasised the significance of the tournament, stating “This event is the perfect opportunity for the Perth Bears to connect with the community and to celebrate local sporting talent right on our doorstep. The Harmony Cup celebrates multicultural Australia and together with sport promotes inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging, all keyvalues of the Perth Bears.”

Perth Bears CEO, Anthony De Ceglie, highlighted the club's commitment to local Rugby League development, noting that the Perth Bears "will provide, for the first time in two decades, a genuine grassroots to elite pathway for players in WA".
He added: "We are deeply passionate about ensuring our local talent can reach the top without leaving the state.”

David Sharpe, Head of Football, said: “Respect is central to the Perth Bears and as the game grows, tournaments like this will provide WA talent the opportunity to showcase their skills.
“Future NRL and NRLW players could be on show this weekend. More importantly is the fact that this tournament provides the opportunity for everyone to participate.”

NRL WA General Manager, John Sackson commented on the undeniable, rapid uptake of rugby league across the state.

“Due to the ever-increasing popularity of the Harmony Cup Nines, this weekend’s event will be dedicated to senior teams, with a separate Junior tournament to be staged early next year," Sackson said.

"The NRL WA Harmony Cup plays a pivotal role in shaping cultural attitudes and behaviours, amplifying the importance of inclusion and respect.”

About Perth Bears

Perth Bears will join the NRL as its 18th team in 2027, marking the return of professional rugby league to Western Australia since 1997. Based in Perth, the club blends the rich heritage of the North Sydney Bears with the vibrant sports culture of WA, creating a team that resonates with fans on both coasts.

Hosted by the NRL WA in conjunction with the South Perth Lions at George Burnett Park, Karawara, the competition invites senior male and female teams from across WA to play short 30-minute league-style games.

Meninga's attending to look for recruits? I'm in with a shot.

Except I only played in the Harmony Cup the first 2 or 3 years. And it was in the Masters division. And I wasn't particularly good. And now I'm 44 and not playing.

Shame.

We aren’t complaining about an NRL club taking an interest in grassroots football within their area now are we?

Not from me. Mine was just a self-deprecating post just for amusement purposes only.

Any scouting of WA talent by WA Bears people will always be a great thing.

Two lower grade Club's Kalamunda and Ellenbrook have re-nominated for the NRLWA 1st Grade competition. A couple of others are not far off.

Great news.
I saw that too. They might struggle for a bit, but they have to persevere and stick it out. It will be great for the game over here to have teams in those locations in the coming years as the NRL gains more local traction. More kids will be wanting to play the sport, so it's a better look for those clubs with juniors too also have top grade teams as well. It would be great to see Serpentine and Mandurah also in the First Grade comp sometime in the near future as well.
