Willie Mason staying with Roosters; Brian Smith offers him fresh slate

From staff writers
October 28, 2009 Sydney Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce says controversial forward Willie Mason is going nowhere and will see out the remainder of his contract with the club.
The 29-year-old Mason, who is entering the final season of a three-year deal, has endured a difficult two seasons with the Roosters but incoming coach Brian Smith has offered him a fresh slate.

He has been considering chasing offers from Japanese rugby, following reports he was unwanted at Bondi Junction.

Mate, don't know if it is, judging by the amount of times the story has changed.

What are the reasons? We couldn't afford the payout, couldn't off-load him or was he never going in the first place? The whole saga could linger for a little while yet. Hope I'm wrong of course.

The rumor mill works harder at this club than any other which hasn't been helpful.

I wondered for some time now about the possibility of sacking Mason to enable the club to buy Tukiri. The refusal of Mason to leave the club the timing of Tukiri signing with the tigers adds strength to those thoughts. I think Mason is a better option than Tukiri but who knows?

Mason may not be staying... drama remains

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,26278072-5012431,00.html

While Tuqiri and the Tigers insist a deal is yet to be struck, speculation is set to continue about the future of Willie Mason, given he has been excused from attending the Sydney Roosters' induction camp today.
Chief executive Steve Noyce confirmed coach Brian Smith had told Mason he would not be required to join his teammates at the Roosters' eastern suburbs headquarters. Noyce declined to reveal the reason for the decision.
But Mason is believed to be preparing for a trip to Japan where he will meet interested rugby union clubs, most notably the Sanyo Wild Knights. Sanyo is looking at Mason as a potential replacement for former Wallaby Daniel Heenan.

Mason flies the coop to Japan

Flown the coop ... Willie Mason is in Japan looking for a rugby deal as his Sydney Roosters teammates go back to training today. Source: The Daily Telegraph

WILLIE Mason has flown to Japan to negotiate with cashed-up rugby union clubs and will miss the Sydney Roosters' official return to training today.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Mason was granted a week's leave by Roosters management to travel overseas with his manager Greg Keenan. Mason flew into Tokyo over the weekend but will return for the Roosters training session on November 9.

Should Mason obtain a deal in Japan, it is understood he would be released from the final year of his Roosters contract. It is understood Mason asked the Roosters for seven days of "personal leave''.

The Roosters' approval of Mason's request was seen as another indication the club was looking to offload the former NSW and Test star. Keenan was not answering his calls last night while Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce was not commenting on Mason.

Mason's former Australian teammate, Craig Wing, signed with a Japanese rugby union club this year for a reported $700,000 a season and the Roosters forward would command similar money.

NRL clubs are slowly returning for pre-season training, with the Roosters, Souths and New Zealand Warriors getting back to work today. Newcastle, Penrith, Wests Tigers and Canberra also return this week.

"We don't need any motivation after the season we just had - it was a disaster,'' Roosters skipper Braith Anasta said.

This has got to get settled soon. It could be destabilising. At the very least, the Willie media circus is just plain annoying.

Speculation about Mason's future will probably continue until the day he leaves Bondi Junction.

If he doesnt get an immediate deal in Japan then the rumours will die down - but they'll still be there in the background annoying everyone and giving journalists something to write about during their quiet weeks.

What I find odd is why Mason is blamed for eveything that went wrong with the club this year. Of all the off field indescretions, his was the lamest yet he is being crucified as if peeing in a laneway is worse than bashing and threatening your missus with a knife.
Still, it's drawn out too long now, it should have been resolved either way before training recommeneced and for this, I think he should move on due to the disruption in ill feeling it must be creating.
