Crowe reveals his American dream

Bloody great idea if you're happy for your top players to play 40-45 games a season after pre-season matches, 24 rounds of footy, up to 4 finals, 3 origins and up to 5 test matches with the Four Nations tournament.

Sure, add another 5 games with a meaningless round-robin competition. The players aren't robots. If this got up they'd have to scrap test footy or shorten the NRL season. F*** that. This is exactly why the pre-season cup got axed.

+1.

Crowe + TV right$ + Air Carrier$ + NRL+ E$L + Vega$ + Casino$ = $$$$$ for all.

And yea,f**k the players who have to turn up after a grueling season.

I recall when Crowe first appeared on the Footy Show with his post season ideas, Vautin just looked at him and said something along the lines of "why don't we play until Christmas"?

You cannot expect our elite players to just keep going.

Look at Anthony Minichiello for an example.

As much as I am trying to admire Crowe and his "ideas", he needs to realise that this is not Hollywood or MGM Studios and these NRL players are doing their own stunts and having their own bodies damaged all year long, they do not have stuntmen/body doubles like in the movies.

I'm in Singapore at the moment, reckon the Govt here would sponsor a SOO game. Noticed a couple of Harvey Norman shops so sponsorship shouldn't be an issue. Reckon the place would go mad for some un sanitised RL action!

Players would do it if they had an incentive. How about $100 000 per win (at least - not to go to the salary cap) per match? Players would go for it. They're greedy buggers. We could trial it and ditch the Four Nations for 1 year (Its really 2 Nations anyway).

Greetings all,

I am currently heading up the development of Rugby League in Seattle, on the West Coast of the US.

Throughout the past 2 months of working on this project, it would be a huge understatement to say I've had a little bit of interest from people wanting to play and to learn more about this great game. The market is certainly here for it to be huge- especially with all the new rules that are constantly applied to NFL to slow the game down and to make it 'safer' (Soon, they'll all be wrapped in bubble wrap).

David Niu (President of AMNRL) has done a fantastic job in promoting the code and developing the AMNRL in the US. Period. However, one man can only do so much.

I believe Crowe's idea is a good one, though, I do agree that players would burn out very quickly with the amount of games played in a short time, as well as the travel etc etc. That said, I do still believe this would be a great opportunity to expand the code into a country that needs it. I do not think it will be an on-going, long term tournament. Just enough to get the ball rolling moreso for the AMNRL.

We'll see what happens.

But, if you want to support me in my developments in Seattle, head to facebookdotcom/seattlerugbyleague

Cheers,

The Force!

Ok there is a lot to like with what Crowe is proposing and a lot to dislike.

The game of Rugby League has been way under exposed in the U.S

Yet when a promotional match has been taken there it has received wide spread interest.

Crowe's plan is very long winded and way too cruelling for players at the end of a footy season.

You have make it one game and you promote it big time in Las Vegas.

The World Club Challenge.

The winner of Super League against the winner of the NRL.

Played at the right time of the year on a neutral field in a neutral country.

Not played at the start of the year and always in Pommy land.

The only problem is what do the do with the footy field for the rest of the year?

How long have you been in Singapore? They are pretty clever people, careful with their money, and not very interested in sport of any kind. Except maybe eating, if that is a sport.

Las Vegas is a city that is planning on developing a team for the Western expansion of the WAMNRL, too! ;-)

Don't mean to go off topic, but I want to know about Rugby League in the US.

Will the AMNRL and WAMNRL be conferences of the same comp, or 2 separate competitions?

Also, is the NRLUS still planned? And if it is, what happens to the AMNRL and WAMNRL when it starts up?

I hate to be such a party sh*tter, but the NFL is way too deeply embedded in American culture for League to even think about competing.
At most, even if we were to hypothetically take your suggestions at face value, league would be very small minority in the US, albeit bigger than what it currently is.
Ideally, we could just buy all their stars and make people watch League just to see their favourite NFL players playing League, but you know as much as anyone else that will never happen.

Wouldn't it be played on an NFL field?

If league in the US was to get just a tiny fraction of the support that the NFL has it would be bigger than the NRL.

The idea has merit but is far too long. I think 1 game (the current WCC) on the other hand is too short. Top 2 from ESL and NRL (decided as grand finalists of premiers and minor premiers, whatever) is a good balance.

Play it in Florida. Jacksonville has a large rugby league following. The Jacksonvile Axemen have a good league side. They just played the Atlantic cup there and by all reports it was a sucessfull event..... Ex- Dragon David Niu is running the Amercian rugby league and is doing a great job, he would welcome any help to improve the reputation and following of rugby league in the US.... Great idea Rusty, keep em coming....

Rusty has great ideas like the one to give everyone in the US a million bucks
http://www.whyfame.com/gossip/russell_crowe_is_not_skilled_at_math_6134

the idea of promoting the game in the US is a good one but not format he's proposing do you think yanks care seeing the top UK/AUS teams playing? just take a couple of NRL teams over there as exhibition games, get them to chuck the ball around (rules out dragons) and do that for a few years to build it up.

one thing about Crowe is he actually cares about the game and wants to see it flourish. whilst i dont like souths i do like the fact he gets on talk shows in the US and talks about souths and gives away souths merch etc...its publicty the other 15 clubs would love to get, sure it doesnt trranslate into any $ (can't see too many stateside attending souths games) but in terms of promoting souths its great

I prefer the current ESL v NRL premiers format to the WCC, moved to October.
While the expanded format has merit, it has various downsides.

-It would either need to cut into the club season or the international season, neither is ideal.
-It's not really the 'best of the best', we might end up seeing the 3rd best v 4th best in the final or something, undermining the finals series' of both comps.
-It lacks serious credibility, with only 2 high standard club comps in the world.

It's a mediocre idea that has been tried before, shot down since and is only getting attention because Captain Phonechucker said it.

Just play the current WCC at a sensible time
