There is no way Gidley is better than Stewart

Whos NSW #1 again?

Stewart was NSW's best in SOO2, Gidley was one of the worst when he was on the field. Stewarts try scoring record speaks for itself and the past 2 seasons has become a great defensive fullback as well.

Gidley missed three weeks and his numbers for the season are just as good if not better than Stewart's, in a worse team. There is also no argument that Gidley hasn't played better football in recent weeks. It's not as clear cut as you make it out to be.

Yeah but a good player (gidley) will always stand out in a team of nuffys.:)

They are about the same, I don't know why people argue over these stupid things. Gidley is important to Newcastle and Stewart is important to Manly because they are both good players.

The Big Match

Greg Prichard | June 28, 2008
Manly v Newcastle

Tonight, Bluetongue Stadium, 7.30pm

What the Sea Eagles say
Veteran forward Steve Menzies is taking no notice of the Knights having several star players out. "They've still got plenty of good players in and their defence has been excellent this season. Newcastle have got a pretty good record against us. We're going to have to work very hard to win."

What the Knights say
Coach Brian Smith is counting on prop and stand-in captain Steve Simpson, who was dropped from the NSW team for State of Origin III, to lead by example. "That's a real powerful weapon for us to have," Smith said. "We need some experience and leadership, and Steve has got both of those things in bucketloads."

What Prichard says
No doubt it is going to be hard for the Knights. They don't have as many stars to start with, and they have had to give up three of those - Kurt Gidley, Danny Buderus and Ben Cross - to Origin. Manly are only missing Brett Stewart for Origin. Added motivation for the Sea Eagles comes from the 13-12 loss in Newcastle in round two. The Sea Eagles, who had also lost in the opening round, have compiled a 9-2 record since losing to the Knights. This is a game Manly should win, but no one can doubt Newcastle's commitment. If the Sea Eagles want to open the door, the Knights will walk through it.

For the Sea Eagles to win
They don't have to change anything. Keep working hard through the forwards, get quick play-the-balls and feed the ball to playmakers Matt Orford and Jamie Lyon while the defence is going backwards. If that happens, Newcastle's defence will be put under big pressure wide of the ruck, where Manly second-rower Anthony Watmough is as likely to score as the outside backs.

For the Knights to win
They are going to have to produce an enormous defensive effort. Without a hooker as crafty as Buderus and a fullback with the game-breaking ability of Gidley, the Knights don't look to have a lot of points in them. If they can't keep the Sea Eagles to two or three tries, they will struggle to win unless they get lucky.

The X factor
Manly props Brent Kite and Josh Perry are a great double act. They have been powering through their work in recent weeks, making big metres with their hit-ups. It starts a chain reaction that often results in Manly getting down the field in a hurry and putting the opposition defence under pressure. Then the creative players take over. It is hard for any team to stop all of that.

What the bookies say
Sportsbook.com.au has Manly at $1.21 and Newcastle $4.50 in the head-to-head market, with the Knights getting 12½ points start at the line. Spokesman Larry Hawke said the agency would cheer for the Knights: "One punter has had $5000 on Newcastle to win the first half, with 6½ points start. He obviously thinks the Knights will hang in there for a while. But the vast majority of the money is for Manly."

Late mail
Manly have a couple of injury worries - Jamie Lyon (shoulder) and Steve Matai (neck) - but are optimistic about them. Newcastle's Adam MacDougall has had the flu, but is expected to play.

MANLY: Robertson; Bani, Bell, Matai, Williams; Lyon, Orford (c); Kite, Ballin, Perry, Watmough, Stewart, Williamson. Interchange: L'Estrange, Hall, Bryant, Menzies, Bradley-Qalilawa, Cuthbertson.

NEWCASTLE: Naiqama; McManus, Sau, MacDougall, Vuna; Bailey, Mullen; Simpson (c), Hilder, Royal, Houston, Paterson, Taia. Interchange: Tolar, Fa'aoso, Wicks, Dureau.

Referee:
Shayne Hayne

Grateful Bani back on wing

Michael Bani is grateful to be back on the wing for Manly after a blood clot health scare.

RETURNING Manly winger Michael Bani has revealed how he feared a dangerous blood clot in his calf could have ended his career.

The Thursday Island-born back admits he feels "very lucky" after a routine check-up two months ago discovered the problem before it became too serious.

Bani tore ankle ligaments in the round prior to Manly's trip to Brisbane in May but was still set to travel with the squad to catch-up with family up north.

But after complaining of continual pain in his leg, Sea Eagles doctor Paul Bloomfield discovered the 10-centimetre clot in Bani's calf that required immediate attention.

Had the 23-year-old flown to Brisbane there was a high risk he could have suffered the potentially fatal deep vein thrombosis.

"I guess I'm very lucky. I'm just grateful to be back playing again," Bani told The Manly Daily ahead of his return for the Sea Eagles in tonight's clash with Newcastle in Gosford.

"It was a pretty scary time ... you never know what could have happened if (Bloomfield) didn't find the clot.

"I did think about (never playing again) and it wasn't something I liked too much."

Bani, who has secured his future at the club for the next three years, said he was shocked when Bloomfield delivered the news.

"I didn't think the injury was that serious," the classy back said.

"It was pretty worrying though. It's still not 100 per cent yet, but it feels pretty good. It's been a long eight weeks so I just want to play."

And Bani, who scored five tries in seven appearances before his injury, will be desperate to make up for lost time against the Knights.

With youngster David Williams proving a revelation on the flank in Bani's absence, coach Des Hasler will have an interesting selection dilemma when Brett Stewart returns from NSW duty next week.

"I think I'll have to do a few more things to put myself in a position where I can keep my spot when everyone is back," an honest Williams said this week.

"Having (Bani) back is obviously a bonus for the team and you want the best people on the park all the time.

"I don't think I've done enough to keep my place ... we'll see how things pan out."

Regardless of who's picked, it's all good news for the Sea Eagles. Kick off at Bluetongue Stadium tonight is 7.30pm.

Wouldn't call one better than the other IMO - one's a career fullback, the other a versatile utility who is best used at fullback.

Hmm that's true, very different roles. I just think of Stewart as just that little bit more explosive than Kidley. But both great players

I really wish we had all our players, and even wish Manly had Stewart and King, it would be a great game to watch with both teams full strength.

Here's hoping it will still be good without the stars.

care to say what happened?

Interviews with both of them, along with the footage, from the big day back in 1995

Started off showing the fight, and the massive hit from the kickoff where Chief knocked himself out.

My favourite part of that whole clip is Cement standing over Chief calling for the stretcher

I just opened a packet of M&M's and the first two were Blue and Red. The next two were both brown. My prediction is Newcastle will win and Manly, as always are sh*t

Very sloppy game all round really. I don't think that Shayne Hayne has helped at all.
