I've shamelessly stolen this piece from the Dragons forum, simply because I think it's hysterical...

Strategic plan' puts Bulldogs before Dragons

BLUESCOPE Lysaght, a company steeped in the history of the steel city of Wollongong, has announced it will sponsor Sydney side the Bulldogs in this year's National Rugby League competition.

The company formerly known as BHP Steel Lysaght, a composite of two names that have been part of the Illawarra landscape for several decades, has signed on the dotted line for the Belmore-based Bulldogs.

Interestingly, Wollongong's NRL team St George Illawarra is without a major sponsor heading into next month's season kick-off.

BlueScope is no longer solely based in the Illawarra and has offices in Melbourne, Asia and the Sydney suburb of Chullora, in Bulldog territory.

The BlueScope partnership with the Bulldogs is sure to raise eyebrows in the Illawarra, along the lines of IMB's decision to link with Cronulla two years ago.

BlueScope Lysaght Australia president Bob Moore said the sponsorship of the Bulldogs was part of a strategic marketing plan.

``It's about repositioning the Lysaght brand," he said.

``Sport is very strong in the building and construction industry, and, in NSW and Queensland at least, rugby league is incredibly popular. What better team to raise the BlueScope Lysaght profile than the Bulldogs?

``We chose to sponsor the Bulldogs predominantly to support our branding activities in NSW. They are a very professional outfit, and Canterbury-Bankstown is a strategic area for us."

Bulldogs chief executive Steve Mortimer said the one-year sponsorship deal would mean the BlueScope Lysaght logo would be displayed on the shorts of the players.

``I'm very delighted to have BlueScope Lysaght on board as an important sponsor," Mortimer said.

``Whilst the organisations are down in Wollongong, there is a big complex up at Bankstown, too."

So basically, a club which may shortly see up to six of its players spending half their lifetimes in the clink is seen as a more "professional outfit" that the Dragons. What are the odds!!

It says they chose one club over the other for marketing reasons. It doesnt say they chose one because they considered it "more professional".

Professionalism was obviously part of their criteria, otherwise he wouldn't have said that...

It's all about selling product.

STi was not even on the radar for this sponsorship because the market is only small compared to what they thought they'd be getting with the Dogs ie Sydney Metro.

"They are a very professional outfit is pure Cognitive Dissonance.

I dont think there's any shame in a sponsor making a decision based on marketing. Clubs do hunderds of sponsor presentations to prospective clients every season. And The criteria is something we arent privvy too, but I think there could be a good argument mounted for a steel supplier to be part of a club that has exposure to builders and decision makers. You have to remember the Dogs have a legacy of building company sponsors through ADCO (?) and NRL. BOth those companies were leveraged through the OASIS deal. I wonder, maybe BHP want to be involved in building OASIS II. They got to put something on that slab.

Now as for Sharks sponsors, I heard a rumour the IMB have e sold NO IMB Sharks home loans yet. In 12 months. Anyone heard different?

dude, i thought the same and removed it 2 minutes before you posted.

But I agree with your point, Its all about sales these days.

There is no room for sponsorships out of goodwill, they have to be converted into return on investment.

Well that's right for the big sponsors...the ones who get jersey space etc

But there are heaps of little sponsors who buy private box space etc, who would just be doing it out of goodwill or habit.

Small sponsors are nearly always fans who want a bit of luxury. I think sponsor packages usually start about 5K and then around 10-12K for a box for the season.

At Carrara for the trial they're actually going 1/2 way between a b ox and a reserved seat. For $50 you get a VIP style enclosure on half way with finger food and drink.

The big sponsors also want TV exposure. there's appranetly a place where they hire all these kids to watch matches and record witha stop watch how many seconds exposure a sign got. I guess a thousand 3 second impacts add up to....f**k, dunno, whatever 3 x 1000 equals. Then they match that to a TV station rate card and say , "for you 1 million dollar shirt sponsor you got $3 million worth of coevrage over the enture year.

Black science if you ask me, but Clubs are using that now to justify the prices they are charging for Shirt, sleeve and pants sponsors

Is that all you can drink?!

$50 for a halfway seat and drinks?! I suppose it's only a trial...

No I think its just 3 drinks, but they'd justify it by saying its half way and there's only two games this year at carrara.

At the club I follow they were charging 120 bux for a sit down dinner, all booze, a talk, and a reserved sea a gvame. I think they were getting 500 takers, but I dont know. The whole top deck of OKI is now Corporates. Nicer earner that Im sure Scott at the Sharks is well onto it.

How much to sit in the Chinese Restaurant on game day, as a matter of interest?

I can believe that.

We approached IMB at Miranda on 2 occasions regarding home loans. We even made an appointment to see a Home Loan consultant, turned up at their office and they weren't even working that day, and nobody else could assist us.

AND they never attempted to follow up the appointment with us. Customer service was non existant.

So I would not be surprised to hear they have not sold any Sharks home loans.

Go easy on Rex, he's OK. I still approve of cutting up his jumper though. You'll be able to identify him from this pic:
