At the club I follow they were charging 120 bux for a sit down dinner, all booze, a talk, and a reserved sea a gvame. I think they were getting 500 takers, but I don’t know.
My brother and sister and I sent my parents to one of these things for my dads b'day . He grew up during the golden era of the dragons. He is not so much interested theses days but will watch the footy on the tele. Anyway we thought him and mum would really enjoy it. The bloke organizing it even asked for a bit of a back ground on my dad.. So My sister emailed him with info regarding dads own sporting feats ...which are not to be shunned at ..I have pics of him in his Australian uniform with Betty Cuthbert.
The dragons bloke said great it will give us something to talk about at the lunch and it was his b'day etc etc.
Anyway they get to this pre-game lunch and are put right up the back of the seating area away form where everyone else was sitting. A whole bus load of people where late and couldn’t make it leaving all this empty seating between my parents and the rest of the crowd and the stage.
Gasnier got on stage and did some sort of crap speech in where he answered questions about how long before he was back on the field.
Then the Dragons president or equivalent starts his speech and mentions my dad and how its was his b’day and about his sporting history . He asks if my dad was in the room , so dad puts his hand up and because he was so far up the back at a big table by himself the president bloke didn’t see him. Then some drunk bloke puts his hand up and claims to my dad . The president gets the shits and says I don’t know who’s given me this information and end of subject.
Mum was absolutely horrified at this as she knew how much trouble we had gone to keep it a secret and get the info to this club.
Then lunch was served and my parents were served dead motherless last and by the time they got their lunch it was stone cold , mum didn’t even touch it.
So the next time I see my dad he tells all about this day and tells me not to tell mum because she didn’t want to upset us kids.
So I ask mum and she can't hold it back and starts crying telling me how embarassed my dad was for being put in that situation. He is very proud of his sporting exploits.
Then this is where my pure hatred for anything that is remotely related to that shite club grows.
My sister gets an email from the bloke who we organized it through and he is into her calling her a liar and that the president had never been so embarrassed before . Naturally I loose my f******** mind and want to kill the bastard . So my sister emails the whole story back to him and nothing not even a “ sorry we got out wires crossed” …. We never heard from him ever again.
Dad has given up on that club .

For the record it was the game against North Qld last year and the cowboys absolutely gave it to them.

what was I thinking? Sending poor old dad into that hell hole.
He's off the footy now , give him bangers and mash in front of the tele watching Zena and he's pretty content.

I've shamelessly stolen this piece from the Dragons forum, simply because I think it's hysterical...

Strategic plan' puts Bulldogs before Dragons

BLUESCOPE Lysaght, a company steeped in the history of the steel city of Wollongong, has announced it will sponsor Sydney side the Bulldogs in this year's National Rugby League competition.

The company formerly known as BHP Steel Lysaght, a composite of two names that have been part of the Illawarra landscape for several decades, has signed on the dotted line for the Belmore-based Bulldogs.

Interestingly, Wollongong's NRL team St George Illawarra is without a major sponsor heading into next month's season kick-off.

BlueScope is no longer solely based in the Illawarra and has offices in Melbourne, Asia and the Sydney suburb of Chullora, in Bulldog territory.

The BlueScope partnership with the Bulldogs is sure to raise eyebrows in the Illawarra, along the lines of IMB's decision to link with Cronulla two years ago.

BlueScope Lysaght Australia president Bob Moore said the sponsorship of the Bulldogs was part of a strategic marketing plan.

``It's about repositioning the Lysaght brand," he said.

``Sport is very strong in the building and construction industry, and, in NSW and Queensland at least, rugby league is incredibly popular. What better team to raise the BlueScope Lysaght profile than the Bulldogs?

``We chose to sponsor the Bulldogs predominantly to support our branding activities in NSW. They are a very professional outfit, and Canterbury-Bankstown is a strategic area for us."

Bulldogs chief executive Steve Mortimer said the one-year sponsorship deal would mean the BlueScope Lysaght logo would be displayed on the shorts of the players.

``I'm very delighted to have BlueScope Lysaght on board as an important sponsor," Mortimer said.

``Whilst the organisations are down in Wollongong, there is a big complex up at Bankstown, too."

So basically, a club which may shortly see up to six of its players spending half their lifetimes in the clink is seen as a more "professional outfit" that the Dragons. What are the odds!!

What does that say about St George Ill????????

Maybe Bluescope can start advertising their steel bar range with their new pals piccies behind them????????????
If this was not such a distressing mess maybe I could chuckle at that but I can't, actually.
