The Country Rugby League has today made an impassioned defence of AAMI Country-City and the important role in plays in highlighting one of Rugby League’s most important development areas.

“We fought extremely hard to keep this game and the ARL Commission has supported us with a significant investment in helping stage the match,” CRL Chief Executive, Mr Terry Quinn, said today.

“At no stage has anyone approached this game as a money-making exercise.

“It was with the best of intentions that we invested in extra grandstand seating for the match but this impacted on the pricing structure and we all have to take some lessons from that.

“It would be a tragedy if people took this weekend’s crowd as a sign of the interest in Country-City.

“This match has an amazing impact in the regions we play in every year and you only have to look at the support it has generated over the past few seasons to understand how many people in the bush want to see this match played.

“We will be doing all we can to grow Country-City in the future and the NRL is extremely supportive of that.”

Steve Mascord hit the nail on the head here...

1. Country roads, take me somewhere
Support for the City-Country game rallied over the 24 hours before Sunday’s game at BCU Stadium in Coffs Harbour. Then 4635 people showed up. The question to be answered is whether NSW needs a selection trial at all. Paul Gallen did say on Triple M on Sunday night that he would have confidence playing alongside Adam Reynolds after seeing him in action. So assuming they do need the game, the next question is whether candidates actually oppose each other in that selection trial. On Sunday, that probably happened only in the front row or second row ... maybe the centres. So if the object is to see how players fare at rep level, not against each other, then why do City and Country have to play each other? ‘‘Sydney Origin’’ would draw a massive crowd in Port Moresby, while Country could take on an island nation or Pacific All Stars in a rural centre and interest would be huge. In the NRL, we’re trying to find the right venues for the right games. At rep level, we have to find the right opponents for the right teams.

Rotate PNG and Fiji each year playing off against City and Country teams. It's great for these nations at the moment, and would provide extra revenue for the CRL with two matches a year (I think both should be played in the Country). One on a saturday night, and one on the Sunday.

Can't believe they actually paid someone $35 per seat to erect that temporary eastern grandstand. I'm not privy to the pricing on that sort of thing but is that a gee up??? $35 per seat.???

Coffs Harbour Council. They own the ground and paid for the game. You could blame them, but that doesn't fit the agenda.

I think we now know 100% that the NRL/CRL and not the Coffs Council were responsible for the setting of ticket prices East CT. Maybe it just reaffirms the 'agenda'. Too many cooks .......

Time for the ARLC to get rid of all the RL's that still exist and take more control over the game.

....and just like that, we have a step in the right direction with a restructure at the NRL. Let's hope they fix this fiasco and get it right in the future. Smith hinted the fixture needs to be a quality game not a Mickey Mouse fixture. We'll see what they come up with in 12 months time.
