We made the finals once in his time at the Panthers. The club is clearly headed in the right direction now. Assuming we ditch Luke Walsh as rumored and sign a decent half for 2014. This side would run rings around our 2013 side:
1. Matt Moylan
2. Travis Robinson
3. Dean Whare
4. James Roberts
5. Josh Mansour
6. Jamie Soward
7. Sam Williams / Todd Carney / Shaun Johnson
8. Tim Grant (c)
9. James Segayaro
10. Brent Kite
11. Sika Manu
12. Lewis Brown
13. Elijah Taylor
14. Sam McKendry
15. Adam Docker / Mose Masoe / Jeremy Latimore
16. Blake Austin / Matt Robinson / Vaipuna Tia Kilifi / Anthony Cherrington
17. Matt Robinsom / Vaipuna Tia Kilifi / Anthony Cherrington / Blake Austin
Matt Moylan is looking the goods in first grade, and will only be better in 2014 after his run in the top grade this season.
Jamie Soward would easily be the best 5/8 at the Panthers since Preston Campbell left. That doesn't say much, but he is a handy player with a great kicking game and managed to lead the Dragons to a premiership not long ago without a proper halfback.
At halfback anyone of those guys would be a huge upgrade from Luke Walsh. They would also be in a good position at the Panthers playing behind a good forward pack with a solid partner at 5/8. Which will hopefully help us sign one of them.
James Segayaro is a beast off the bench and deserves more minutes.... which gives us a spine that is well and truly ahead of anything we have had since 2006.
Front row is going well this season despite not picking ACTUAL front rowers most weeks. Next season a rotation of Kite, Grant and McKendry is a great start and would be rounded out well with anyone of Docker, Masoe and Latimore. There's quality, experience and depth here. This doesn't include some of the more promising guys who could at some point put their hands up this season.
Second row is arguably our biggest strength with most signings being second rowers. Elijah Taylor will likely come in and play lock for us, Brown and Manu are pretty handy in our second row this season. Matt Robinson has been good for us in most of his first grade appearances, while Austin and Cherrington have been killing it in reserve grade and already have first grade experience behind them. Then there's Vaipuna Tia Kilifi who will be one of the best second rowers the Panthers have brought into first grade since Frank Pritchard.
Then not far behind them there are some ridiculous talents like George Jennings, Bryce Cartright, Dallin Watene Zelezniak, Tony Satini, Daniel Foster etc. who could even put pressure on first graders this season.
Our results in 2013 are far from where we want them to be in first grade. But things are definitely looking good for the future. Gus has come in and identified our key weaknesses, and done a hell of a job in working toward fixing them. Just fixing the halves alone would go along way to fixing some of our other issues. But he has given us quality depth, improved our Under 20's, put more focus on our reserve grade team as the secondary team rather then Under 20's. WIth the stars being promoted to play against grown men and being better prepared for first grade.
I'm not saying every decision Gus has made is perfect. But the club has definitely moved in the right direction and is setup for a stable future thanks to him.
