Think it's to do with discretion, a player being in a better position to decide whether or not defenders were impeded or some crap.

But as gus said, they have to work from a checklist and aren't allowed discretion away from that checklist which makes being an ex player irrelevant.

And yet, we will see just as many tries like that given as are disallowed. So discretion is involved in some part, and it's what leads to inconsistent calls, which is why so many people are angry about that call. We see so many different interpretations it's hard to know what is or isn't a try now.

I thought an 8 point try was only for a foul act after a try had been scored, not trying to prevent one
