Despite the fact captains aren't supposed to approach the refs?

Not during play. The play was stopped and had been for 5 minutes
the rule was designed to stop captains from approaching the referee for explainations to give their defensive line time to set and rest. Not to stop captains from speaking to a referee during a 5 minute break in play where a guy is getting put on to a stretcher.

This is why there should be an 18th man- the Knights are disadvantaged by the refs being gutless and the Storm being able to commit foul acts

He didn't argue particularly well. But the point stands, all lifting tackles need penalties. They let one go, then penalized the next one. They need some balls. I won't complain if our guy goes for a couple weeks, it was pretty nasty.

People really think he would try milk a penalty by driving his head into the ground neck first...
Not possible he was trying to roll over thinking he was being flipped around or got disorientated? No, clearly tring to break his own neck, penalty to Melbourne, some genius views in here
It happened many times last year.

Reynolds won the Dogs a game doing it.

I just can't fathom why he chose to duck his head in like that. It might not be a popular opinion but I suspect he did try and milk the penalty but it went even worse than he thought.

People do stupid things all the time. So I don't see why we should say "surely no one would do that". Inglis did it half a dozen times last year alone.

I only saw the replay at half time. There looked to be hands between his legs and he was lifted. That has to be a penalty. Sure he made it look worse, but it wasn't intentional rather from a safety concern.

It all depends how he felt in the tackle. If he thought he was going all the way over ducking the head is the best way to protect yourself

I do agree it was a poor look from smith. At the end of the day the ref wasn't going to change his mind. It's 30 seconds to halftime, have a chat to the ref then. Whether you think it's a penalty or not it made smith look like an arsehole.
