I usually stick to the Knights forum for discussing our games, but I felt people were being rather silly trying to use this game as a slight against Mullen, especially since DCE was just awful for most of the game. I honestly don't think any of the other NSW 5/8 contenders come under the same level of scrutiny as he does.
They don't. Not even remotely in the same galaxy of scrutiny.

According to Mullen at the press conference the Boyd field goal is a set play they've got because Mullo gets rushed as the only kicker when he goes for a field goal.

I thought it was the right tackle to take the shot on beacuse you had Manly on the back foot. However I think the execution was poor and Mullen could have had a good shot at it if he got back another 5 metres or so. It's also very concerning for you if your half back is unable to kick a field goal too.

Edit: Posted this before watching and thought Mullen was deeper originally before he passed the ball. Rochow(?) was tackled about 15 metres out with the defensive line retreating. If Mullen positioned himself about 25m out he would have got the easiest shot he would ever be likely to get. Instead he passes to Boyd for the shot instead. Set play or not it was a stupid decision

Edit 2: This is a still from the game just as Mullen is getting the ball. If he positioned himself where I put the X he would have had a pretty easy shot, there was no one rushing out of the Manly line

Agree with you, but what can you say? It's a set move that they've been practicing at training, and it didn't come off. Darius even called for the ball (which he stated in his Knights TV interview post-match).

Ultimately, it was a set play that didn't come off. Should Mullen have been further back and taken a shot? Possibly, but it's not what they trained for. If Boyd makes the goal, they look like geniuses. It's definitely a good idea if Boyd can kick them... and allegedly he can.

allegedly

I mean maybe that's the point of the plan; nobody knows that Boyd can kick field goals because he's never kicked one his career so the opposition won't prepare for it.

The plan seems a little off to me but what can you do.
