Lyon didn't have anyone on him when he did it. The rule was changed a few years ago to allow for an 'involuntary' grounding of the ball.

Yeah I remember the catalyst for that.

Some player slipped while picking up the ball with no defenders around him.

Went on to score a try and was called back as a dropout.

So they changed the rule to accomodate that.
