Nrl leads union on pay tv and just behind union on fta

yeh sky nz are going to pay less for the nrl rights with another team in it
Imagine if the Kiwis played 7 or 8 test games through the year, that could only help!

Yeah, but if the NRL shuns Sky, who do they go with.. TVNZ? Sure, probable uproar when the State owned broadcaster pays big money for it though... and they've been recently cost cutting.

Discovery/TV3? Nope - they just axed their whole newsroom to save money.

Let's be honest, unless some white-knight media outlet (streaming?) comes along or they do their OWN subscription streaming service for NZ, the NRL will take a cut in NZ broadcast revenue if they ditch Sky.

And Sky know it.
Sky aren't bidding against a network or the NRL, they have a price point of subscriptions.
It's an easy calculation for the NRL to know exactly what they are worth to Sky:
NRL viewing numbers multiplied by the subscription fee...
The negotiation point is simple what's a fair profit margin? The negotiation is already down to give or take a couple of million..
A second NZ team takes it to possibility realm and far harder to calculate. More in the 10's of millions.

The NZ market is by far the biggest potential for the NRL to grow.

Assume they must pump the ads by gradually delaying the game …. Still … better than nothing if you are a tightwad RL fan living over there
You just described every kid that wants to watch RL, the more you put on free to air, the best chance of getting the next generation invested

Maybe FTA might be a bit more interested this time?
FTA in NZ until recently with sky open(which is at sky’s mercy) was very rare to see a live game of either code, most would be 2 hours + delayed and with ads pushing the finish times pretty late. NZ doesn’t have the same laws Aus does around FTA on national broadcasters. I remember when I was a kid in the old decoder days I’d sometimes ‘watch’ the scrambled footage just so I could hear live commentary
Both the main FTA providers are in massive cost cutting mode it’d be hard to see them able to compete with sky.
The NRLs best alternative would be its own streaming service, Sky would loose viewers in droves if that happened

They would only do an nz streaming service if they were doing one in Australia to absorb all the costs of it like production

NRL stars back potential Fiji expansion team

“There’s so much raw talent over there.”

Fijian internationals and NRL superstars Apisai Koroisau and Viliame Kikau have both backed a Fiji expansion team to enter the NRL competition in the future.

ARLC Chairman Peter V'landys and NRL CEO Andrew Abdo have both revealed that three new expansion teams will follow The Dolphins and enter the NRL over the next decade as they try and create a 20-team competition.

While a Perth team and a team from Papua New Guinea are all but confirmed to be the following two expansion teams, this only leaves one spot open.

As rumours continue to flow on who will be given the right to be the 20th team to enter the NRL competition, a team from Fiji has emerged as a possibility over the past few months along with other options.

Fiji's potential to become an expansion team one day had already earned the backing of rugby league legend Petero Civoniceva but has now earned the backing of premiership-winners Apisai Koroisau and Viliame Kikau.

"100 per cent," Koroisau said when asked if he'd love to see an expansion team from Fiji enter the competition.

"Just finding that pathway into rugby league, not just rugby league but the NRL. If that was coming from home, that'd be incredible.

"There's so much raw talent over there, so if they were able to put together a team, I'm sure they'd be able to find 17 players to take the field each week."
A potential Fijian expansion team comes as the Kaiviti Silktails - a Fijian club - were promoted to the Jersey Flegg Cup this season in a historic agreement with the NSWRL after previously playing in the Ron Massey Cup.

Aiming to grow rugby league outside of Australia, Koroisau, Kikau, Sunia Turuva, Taane Milne, and Marcelo Montoya are just some of the players who could potentially feature in the expansion side.

"Yeah, 100 per cent. I'd do anything to get whatever that movement is, to get all the talent back in my homeland and get those guys this opportunity," Kikau added.

"I was born and bred there and just seeing how much it has helped me not only myself but my family. It would be a blessing to open that door for Pacific Islanders.

"Rugby union is sort of the major sport back there, so having that Silktails team competing in the Jersey Flegg has opened up rugby league back home and Melbourne and Newcastle taking the pre-season game back home was massive.

"Hopefully, we'll do more (promoting) over there in the next couple of years."
One of the bids they will have to contend with will be from the Newtown Jets who have proposed a joint-bid with the Ipswich Jets after pulling out of the Western Australia big process.

The potential team would see the team called the Jets and play in Newtown colours when competing in New South Wales.

"The Newtown RLFC board has considered this ‘once in a lifetime opportunity' for Newtown to return to top-level Rugby League with an interest and equity in the new club and accordingly decided to join the bid," a club statement read.

"The board also reaffirmed the strength of our long-standing partnership with Cronulla Sharks and acknowledged their tremendous support."

Currently the feeder club of the Cronulla Sharks in the NSW Cup, the Jets still have a loyal fan base despite their exit from the NSWRFL competition 41 years ago in 1983.

Established in 1908, Newton won three premierships in 1910, 1933, and 1943 and made seven Grand Finals in 1913, 1914, 1929, 1944, 1954, 1955, and 1981.

Their last Grand Final appearance before their exit saw them field a team consisting of rugby league greats such as John Ferguson, Tommy Raudonikis, and Phil Gould, coached by Warren Ryan.

I was thinking more like the opening up WatchNRL that you can get elsewhere in the world to NZ
I hadn't thought of that, but that could be the threat the NRL needs to leverage a better deal from Sky.

I wonder if they've run the figures on what a WatchNRL plus a little free to air offering (maybe cut a deal with TVNZ and/or Three just to spite Sky) would earn compared to Sky?

Watch NRL is around $220 a year. So they would need to get around 150k subscribers to match the current SkyNZ deal. Given Kayo with all its sports and SL is only $25 a month is there enough fans in NZ willing to pay $18 a month just for NRL?
As you say they could sell one or two games to a FTA channel for an affordable proce to get good exposure to the less fanatical and bring in a bit of extra cash.

The closest thing to Kayo n NZ is sky sport now which is NZ$49.99 a month…$18 a month doesn’t seem too bad after that.

Kayo has every sport

nrl doesn’t need a big nz tv deal it’s better to stay on platforms with more exposure esp with sky open

a second nz team is worth more for sky nz but also its around 12 more games foxsports and channel nine get which is also valuable

but that's the same for any new club coming in. Arguably another Australian club is going to generate better Australian Tv $'s and more interest to corporates than a NZ club so there has to be some pay off for bringing in another NZ club. Be it in Tv value or some other monetary value.

Id say maybe at International level more Kiwis equals stronger NZ team but after last pacific championship that's not maybe needed lol
