This must be the fourth time at least that the Telegraph has gone down this path with Perth or PNG “about to be announced as early as next week ” …

I do see them announcing PNG soon though, because it appears that all the money has already been agreed with the Aust Govt …this doesnt seem to be the case with Perth yet with the WA Govt

There is also a lot more to be done in PNG so they need to get moving pronto ..

Am I alone in absolutely hating the PNG team being part of the NRL?

To provide some context rather than just a statement. I think it is a huge risk that it is a failure waiting to happen. Without the significant funding it doesn’t even get a look in. What happens when that money runs out?
Additionally I think given the state of the nation at the moment giving that much funding to a sport is a ridiculous decision that a tiny amount of the population even care about and even then less about PNG specifically.

Lastly I think any tax cuts is a direct cap breach, and if anyone needs me to explain why that is then I give up.

Watch it, you’ll be labelled a rascist if you don’t agree to PNG joining the NRL on here lol

Seems to me it would be to PNG`s advantage and enhance their chances of success if the Perth bid didn`t materialise, well until 2032 at least.

Papua New Guinea’s inclusion in an expanded NRL competition is expected to be formally announced before Christmas, in a move that will place even more pressure on the Perth bid.
PNG’s funding has been secured and approved, with possible announcement dates for this month now being discussed.
It could even be as early as next week.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his PNG counterpart, James Marape, will seek to attend the announcement given the $600 million in government funding being invested into the bid.
While PNG’s entry is assured, Perth continues to cause some consternation for the NRL.
This masthead recently revealed the NRL was on the verge of agreeing terms with the Western Australian government on a deal would pave the way for the Perth-based Bears to become the code’s 18th team. It came after ARL Commission boss Peter V’landys held urgent talks with the WA government, which included WA premier Roger Cook and treasurer Rita Saffioti.

While talks were positive, it is growing increasingly unlikely that it would meet the NRL’s timeline, with the governing body’s preference being to announce both franchises’ entry at the same time.
Announcing PNG would place further heat on Perth to finalise a deal with the NRL.
The NRL remains hopeful that Perth can still be ready for NRL inclusion in 2027 – but time is quickly getting away from the Western Australian bid consortium.
Despite the unexpected delays, the NRL still believes Perth will be part of an expanded NRL competition.
There are suggestions that Perth and the NRL are slowly edging towards in-principle support before then progressing to a long-form agreement.

But NRL officials won’t be confident until the entire deal is completed.
The Perth team would still be known as the Bears, whose management is sitting back waiting and watching as negotiations continue.
PNG is still likely to be the 19th team due for NRL entry in 2028.

doubt its a negotiating tool. nrl want that cash and to get it they need to get png up and running.
it's only a tool as far as lighting a fire under perth's butt to get them to hurry up, probably because vlandys wants to announce both jointly to avoid answering too many difficult questions that'll come png's way. the hows, whens, whys. lot of uncertainty about how it'll work.

fair play. much easier to make it a feel good story on the day with a here's perth and bears back in the comp, we will answer all png stuff in due time sort of thing.

Vlad has bought the main steam media with the last tv deal, they won’t be asking him any hard questions about png. Only dissenting voices have been in podcasts etc. no one in main stream has asked him any of the hard questions about png’s competitiveness, lack of media value and long term viability.

What if the NRL say "OK, we have a deal with NZ 2 for team 18, and PNG will be team 19 because we can get NZ set up earlier due to PNG logistics.. oh and if Perth want that 20th place we need x, y, and z to happen.." maybe even opening the possibility of Brisbane 3 for that 20th spot if Perth doesn't deliver all of the NRL's wishlist for a Perth team?

I said it should be a genuine brisbane 2 club playing all games at suncorp, not redclifee called ‘the’ dolphins appealing to just a section of brisbane, Playing some games in a sub standard stadium and leaving a gap that will require a third licence to fill.

The fact thre are already calls for brisbane3 to fill a gap not filled by the dolphins has merely validated my sentiments on dolphins not being the best strategic choice.
