I realise it seems unlikely, but it's not altogether impossible - and the NRL (well, basically Vlandys) recent attitude to Perth indicates it MIGHT be a kinda hardball thing that happens.
It might but given nz is offering far far less than wa govt it seems unlikely. Not to mention nrl seems committed to owning the club where as they haven’t shown any such commitment for orcas and we’ve heard they aren’t keen on private investors owning start up clubs.

You said Brisbane already has a team so adding another wasn’t expansion

You said the dolphins would be a disaster

Calls for Brisbane 3 are because Brisbane 2 has been a massive success
I did, and it isn’t, it’s consolidation of an exiting strong market.

no I didn’t, I said they are unlikley to be as big as a genuine brisbane 2 could be. The proof of that one way or the other is yet to be seen. We’ve seen around a 15% drop off in crowds year 1 to year 2.
i think they’ve done very very well in their start up. They finished where most expansion teams have historically in first two years so on par there. Their marketing has been spot on, their fan and corporate start up has been strong, let’s hope it continues and doesn’t do a titans. moving more games to Suncorp is a good call.

calls for brisbane 3 are because the city wasnt divided up broncos north, easts south like it should have been. No need for a third club if that had happened.

Would be nice if people would admit they were wrong. People were saying Firehawks would get in right up until dolphins were announced. Then spent two years saying dolphins would flop. Then told us Perth consortium was backed by big time investors..

It's delicate. He obviously wants Perth as team 18 so he doesn't want to push too much that WA govt walks away. There's no votes in this club so they wouldn't be as desperate as some on here think.

Firehawks where the right choice, but too big a threat to the broncos and as news ltd was paying for the new clubs admission it came as no surprise they went with the least threatening option.

it was, 6 rich people and a wa govt with a $400mill spending cheque.

Dolphins second biggest club in NRL by some metrics. Perth consortium couldn't afford entry fee.
Did we ever find out who was backing consortium other than Sydney Kings?! Was Neville Nobody one of them?!

We got very lucky cook isnt as parochial as most wa people and hasn’t walked away after the Perth ownership got booted!

having seen previous WA govt’s burnt badly by the ARU with the force situation they are probably playing hard ball on cast iron guarantees that the nrl won’t let the club fall over. Nrl probably pushing hard for more nrlwa funding. Seems the other investments; temp training base, permenant CofE and stadium upgrades are agreed.

seems ownership model is agreed with nrl funding start up and Electing first club board with a mind to eventually move to members owned model some time down the track (though that could just as easily move to a private ownership model if someone offered them the right money and security I suppose) and giving up on a license fee (lol)

When the sharks got govt money to upgrade a privately owned stadium how did you feel about that
Do you mean the 9.6M grant in 2006 to provide a single stadium at the southern end of which didn’t cover the full scope to build?

I felt it wasn’t enough at the time to provide acceptable levels of comfort for people that use the stadium for public use to attend many events not just sharks games 10-12 times a year.

Turns out most of this forum agree it wasn’t enough given the amount of slack thrown at the stadium. You won’t find any sharks fans defending it. I hate the place.

What the above doesn’t change is that 600M is a large amount of money for a footy team that let’s face it, will be full of expats from AU who are looking for a tax break all in the name of political sway. Yep they deserve a team alright.

In terms of diplomacy it's the cheap option

It’s a very visible way of showing connection Between the countries, because I guess the $2.5billion in last 4 years we have already given them isn’t quite enough?

Be interesting if China come along and offer $1bill for something in return for a naval harbour or something if the govt can threaten to remove the club if png say yes to any such china projects?

You think the people of png have any influence on their govt policy re chinas funding? I’m sure if China offer a few bill to improve clean water the good people of png will send them packing as they now have an nrl club lol

Got a question PR :)

Malaga ? The permanent COE will be based here, I must be missing something on Google it looks like an industrial estate. Can't see any space for facilities too. We have quite a few clients that come from WA and they are all based west in or near Cottesloe. Never been to Perth but this looks like it is going to be out in the boon docks.
- Is demographically a right area ? ex: VICNRL setup in Broadmeadows the area has a lot of Polynesians/Maori so its going great for juniors etc.. The area has a RL demo graph.

It is a very strange location! It is an industrial area surrounded by low cost housing suburbs. It’s only a 15min drive from Hillarys, sorrento etc which are up market beach side suburbs. Can’t see where they could build it in Malaga, it’s already fully developed, only the buffer strip with Reid Highway left but can’t see them using that,

Someone over here claims it’s nearer whiteman park/ Ellenbrook but that’d be even further away from the nicest areas!
the northern suburbs do have some strong local Jnr clubs (nth beach,Joondalup, Ellenbrook and Alkimos).

I heard they are intending to link up the bold park sporting centres with a precinct type development so very surprised it isnt being built there. Much nicer area and more central.

they have just built a $50mill soccer centre out at queens park which again isn’t an obvious nice place to put one so who knows, maybe they are spreading the love around Or using up the cheapest crown land.
