Remains to be seen if AFL will try to swindle any, if not all of the $91m committed funding to upgrading Barlow Park (rectangular) for Cazalys Stadium (oval) instead.

I don’t think they’ll be successful if they did try though. The wheels are well and truly in motion to commence Barlow Park redevelopment in the near future including official state government announcement (I know that doesn’t mean much especially considering it was announced under Miles/Labour and there’s been a change of government. However Crisafulli is a north Queenslander).

Also
the state government are already taking tenders from builders (looking like Watpac might be successful at this stage). The process is deep into the pre-construction commencement planning phase (in ECI stage with consultants finalising design and functionality of design).

Cazalys upgrades aren’t scheduled to be part of the Olympic stadia build’s & facilities upgrades (at this stage anyways) so this might mean that there is a possibility that the AFL might have to partially fund Cazalys upgrades themselves, if they want it bad enough.

All points towards there being difficulty and hopefully roadblocks in AFL’s quest for Cairns/Far North Queensland.

All off topic to NRL’s 18th/19th team but thought it was worth bringing up to add further info to the post.

Didn’t know Barlow park was getting so much

Together with Sunshine Coast getting something too

Shame kayo wasn’t made into a 25k to 30k

People complained about the cowboys getting 300 million as a single tenant stadium yet the afl stadium in cairns would have zero regular top level tenants

Darwin Drongos & Cairns Cow-ards for teams 20 & 21, do it.

Grifters will probably get that 20k stadium though, meanwhile Barlow Park gets one grandstand and the athletics track remains.
I genuinely admire their gumption

They just don’t take no for an answer
