Lmao Tunza taking my side when it affects his rugby league club

That’s epic !

At least if png were based in cairns it would’ve kept the cities focus on league

Now that’s been denied due to the cowboys they will go full tilt for a fumble team

Rugby league participation in Cairns dwarfs the fumblers
Correct. Great participation that I got to see from the coal face of it. I played for Ivanhoes for half a season after not playing any sort of footy for a decade + prior. Great and unforgettable experience even though I was very mature aged in comparison to my early 20’s year old team mates.

The Cairns/FNQld comp was buzzing and I believe it still is, if not even better. Saints, Kangaroos, Atherton, Mareeba, Brothers and Ivanhoes all had good amount of juniors.

250 teams playing club footy. Doesn’t include school comps and rep stuff. Game is going gangbusters there.

It's not even that though, the standard is far far higher.

People like Brad Arthur coached at CDRL level. Not to mention numerous Origin and NRL players.

Where as AFL is all low level guys.

Bro, when did you play Suburbs have been the Cockatoos for like 30 years?

You forgot Innisfail Brothers (now Leprechauns) and the Mossman Sharks.

The Edmonton Storm and Yarrabah Seahawks play these days.

17 or so years ago. Everyone (locals) just called them Saints tbh.

Yeah I didn’t mention all clubs only the ones that I vividly remember having good amount of players/juniors through their grades. Keeping in mind I only played half a season and didn’t get chance to play against every club or the joy of going to Yarrabah etc but I did hear the stories….

Never heard of the Saints in the CDRL. Cairns Saints are in the local afLOL.
I believe it had something to do with the amount of churches in and around Gordonvale. At the time there was around 7. Like I said, it’s the nickname locals (at the very least all the locals I met in the footy community) gave to Southern Suburbs during my time there.

The nickname is what stuck with me there on after.

Who cares really. cairns isn’t team 18, 19 or even 32- well maybe 32.

so what we thinking then? png west aussie nz2 then radelaide and ippy? or will Melbourne 2 make a case to jump over radelaide and ippy to be 21?

Never ever heard that, ever. Must have been a very niche thing with your team. And Gordonvale certainly isn't know for its Churches.

If anything us Cairns locals just knew of them as "Suburbs".

If you said Saints to locals they would think the Hockey team that plays in Woree.

Possibly mate, I could be completely off as it’s just recollection. I lived in the northern suburbs the entire time I was there (which was a couple of years). Smithfield at first then Trinity Beach. I didn’t venture to the southern suburbs much unless I needed to.

Where in Cairns are you from? Folks still regularly live there (during winter) they have a little property on Palm Cove that they airbnb during summer. Beautiful part of the world and as far as footy is concerned, always a strong comp and good juniors stream from it.
