more things i notice from this match, no tattoos, all clean skins,
all crew cut haircuts, no wacky hair-doo's
and no trainers running around everywhere all over the place interfering
interaction with the referee was minimum, no yelling from the ref or players,
the referee looked relaxed and calm and in control, players respected him,
were not trying to undermined him
and more things, ref not mic-ed up, cant hear what he is saying, not like these days
no bunker either

Your so right BlueBags , that is a major distraction in today’s game , there is just too much outside interference going on within the actual play . As you have said the ref is not respected to the same degree as he once was , and the delaying tactics used by some teams is nearly on par with the antics associated with soccer .

So often one hears “ that the teams of the modern era would had beaten the team of yesteryear “ . And pigs fly ! If today’s teams played under the same match rules and regulations they would had been flogged - imo .

And finally the other point that you brought up is those damn trainers ! The beggars should be barred from the field unless a referee calls for their presence, after all with the refs and trainers all being ‘ wired for sound ‘ there would not be any great hold up in the case of a serious injury. Besides all they do is deliver messages from the coach to the players and I am quite sure that my blue cattle dog would have more first-aid experience than the lot of them put together .

Rant over . :rage:

Thanks for posting.....brings back so many memories.

I’ve forgotten what that trick’s called when a player (usually a forward) is almost tackled then they get their arms free and pass it to a support player?

McGregor forgot too. But ( and this in no way exonerates Mary ) out of the hundreds of tackles in that game less than a dozen involved more than two tacklers in the tackle and of those none were with the intention of slowing down the play the ball. Not one tackle involved more than 3 tacklers, even close to the line - unheard of back then. Bellamy may be a great coach but his heinous and damaging legacy on the game is perfectly hi-lighted by this game that showcases what we've lost.

Yeah Great memories, thanks for posting Bluebags.
Goldthorpe and Hardy had the game on a string and Choc and Brown just added the cream.

Gareth, I think the issue of diminishing respect for the referee can be partly put down to the practice of refs calling players by their first name and occasionally chatting informally to them at full time. I can't remember exactly when this trend started but it must be well over ten to fifteen years ago. Before that it was by number only. Familiarity breeds contempt in this environment.

A very good point meraputih , if memory serves me correct it began in the Greg Hartley era . Good ole Greg use to love having a bit off a chin-wag to the boys dressed in maroon and white - the jersey with the big bird on it . And then there was ‘ have-a-chat ‘ Bill Harrigan , whom I am sure must had had his autograph book filled a hundred times over with the signatures of his favorite players .

And now days we have every referee called Tom , Dick and Harry not only chatting with C. ‘ Ref ‘ Smith , but also bowing to him for goodness sake . The refs should be calling players by their numbers only and really laying down the law of the game to the captains .

If they are sufficiently trained to do their job , then hopefully the respect shall return to the men in white as it is undoubtedly a thankless task .
