Thanks for posting.....brings back so many memories.

I’ve forgotten what that trick’s called when a player (usually a forward) is almost tackled then they get their arms free and pass it to a support player?
its called a late offload, remember them :) lol
fantastic ball skills, ball movement by both teams
the ball was never dead, not like the game these days
dragons won 7 in a row to get to the Grand final,
very very weird season 1996, cause the super league war had started
before season kickoff, and a lot of infighting in all clubs, including dragons
over halfway through the season, dragons were still not in top 8
coach David Waite, turned the team around with his magic
got them playing as a team, and not individuals

round 1
cancelled games, forfeit games, cause of super league war
- Due to the Super League war, clubs aligned with the Super League refused to take part in round 1. As such, only 4 games were played, all between two ARL-aligned teams. Of the remaining 6 games, Super League teams Canberra, Penrith, Cronulla and the Western Reds forfeited their games to the ARL-aligned clubs South Queensland, Parramatta, Newcastle and St George respectively. The match between Canterbury and North Queensland was cancelled, and Brisbane forfeited to Auckland due to Auckland fielding a team consisting of players from the Otahuhu Leopards and Ellerslie Eagles clubs. As a result of the forfeitures, 9 teams were in the top 8 after the first round due to ties on points differential.

With the Super League war in full effect off the field, those clubs affiliated with the breakaway competition refused to participate in five games of Round 1, all forfeited to ARL-aligned clubs and only four of the ten scheduled games took place. Of the two games between two Super League clubs, Canterbury versus North Queensland was cancelled, whilst Auckland flew a team consisting of players from the Otahuhu Leopards and Ellerslie Eagles clubs to Brisbane and were thus declared winners over the Broncos by forfeit.[1]

Thanks for posting, BB.
Great to see the jersey and strip as a whole, favourite jumper aside from the Penfolds outfit.

Some very good players there from both sides. A number of Origin players.

Campion was a great tough player.
Brownie with hair!

One big factor l've noticed was each team setup much deeper than today.
Todays teams are lineball and have no depth for a decent play and to pick up speed.

I was at that game.

That moment at 53 minutes was sublime. I have always been a massive fan of Barto.

Choc at d/h, pass to Barto, falling in the tackle offloads to Choc. Nite Irene.

Barto was also instrumental with our win against the Dogs with a 70 metre dash leading to Brown scoring to win it on the bell in the same year.

And his try against Canberra ( semi final ) from dummy half that year.

Superleague really decimated a good Dragons team. The thought of getting swallowed by the Roosters done me. We are so lucky someone had some brains to renige on that move. Think yourselves lucky Illawarra and Saints fans that we amalgamated no bickering next year please.
So true. Look at the players saints lost in 97. It was pretty much a whole team. Gourley, Barnhill (Easts), Mundine (Brisbane), Zisti, Goldthorpe (Hunter), Donnelly, Campion, Quinn (Adelaide), Stevens (Cronulla), Stone (Canterbury)

miraculous that we got so close to the top 7 (what a weird playoff system they had that year) with all those players leaving. Thankfully still had the loyal ones in coyne, Hardy, Thompson, Bell and Ward

What stood out for me in the game is that they were a relatively young squad and they had plenty of confidence . Jeff Hardy always a busy player , really enjoyed watching him play and Wayne Bartrim had that touch of class about him . Goldthorpe knew how to get the attack going and kicking was first rate .

One player who could had been better if only he put more oomph into his game was Scott Gourley he always struck me as lazy , only a half hearted effort .

Still the game was great viewing and it shows you that regardless of how young a team may be , they can still go a long way - if they have the right man cracking the whip .

David waite should have been kept on as coach, he was very smart with the game,
and players reviews
he worked out how to get the very best out of the bench
studied opposition game plans, very hard worker as a coach

The major loser from the JV. Clear to everyone that farrer was not a pigs arse of a coach next to Waite but politics reared its ugly head. Thought i'd never see a worst coach of the Dragons until.......!

more things i notice from this match, no tattoos, all clean skins,
all crew cut haircuts, no wacky hair-doo's
and no trainers running around everywhere all over the place interfering
interaction with the referee was minimum, no yelling from the ref or players,
the referee looked relaxed and calm and in control, players respected him,
were not trying to undermined him
and more things, ref not mic-ed up, cant hear what he is saying, not like these days
no bunker either
