Stumps

England 430
Australia 5/264

Watson 29*
Lyon 6*

England ahead by the wicket of Voges I would say.

To many starts and poor shots once set on a pitch with no demons.

Unlucky for Buck he deserved a ton, we still have the mighty Shane Wazn to guide us to a big first innings total.

Didn't expect it to be this close, but it sounds like conditions are flat and that should suit Sunshine perfectly.

lol Stokes' reaction at Cook getting hit in the nuts.

I tuned into the coverage with him falling to the ground holding his nuts and thought he was hit .lol

come the day come the man. Sunshine to shackle past the 30s in style is my prediction

England will be hoping for a bit of early morning swing and some good use out of the new ball.

Australia putting on 200 odd runs for the last 5 wickets is not uncommon so I can still see it being very close at the start of the second innings unless England strike early.

Wazn has just passed the triple quiney mark, so we may as well count him as being dismissed as well.

Such a frustrating innings. Players of Clarke & Smith's class really needed to go on and make big scores. England on top-the last 2 blokes in the side you'd rely on to make runs are Twatto & Haddin. Hope I'm proven wrong.

Everyone got a start so we should have done much better.

I thought Clarkie was harsh on Haze, he is struggling with the amount of swing he is getting, particularly against the left handers and the ball is drifting into their legs and becoming run fodder. He need more overs with this new ball to move his line over, banishing him will not help in the long term imo.

Smith, Clarke and Voges all getting out in the 30s is unacceptable. You would expect two of the three to convert those scores.

Also, it may sound harsh but that's 7 consecutive 50s to Buck, and he hasn't converted one. That's also poor (but a lot more forgivable than the other three).

Our batting lineup is just dumb to say the least, this pitch is a pancake and we are trying our absolute best to make Moen Ali look like the second coming of Shane Warne!

Agreed with the above, too many starts when we really needed a couple of them to go on make a big score. I went to bed after Rogers got out and the pitch didn't seem to have any demons in it.

Smith's dismissal was atrocious, I'm probably going to sound harsh but for a bloke in 90's Chris Rogers also got out to a bog average shot with an angled bat that seems to be the text book Shaun Marsh dismissal.

All down to Watto and Haddin and the tail to at least knock off some of the deficit. If they can get a small lead that would be great. At least we have some handy tail order bats because I'm not going to hold my breath on Watto and Haddin.

The worst thing about those 3 dismissals for mine is that they all got themselves out.

Sure I was delighted to be wrong about having to follow on....simple mistake to make.

But Wazn will be out first over tonight.

Australia bowling 45 minutes before lunch 100-140 behind.

Absolute no chance of a lead.

Yeah one over then done. Wasn't like Starc or Johnson were bowling tight either.

We really struggle without the ball coming onto the bat as well as it does on a bouncy wicket. Not good.

Watson has a chance to justify selectors faith in him anyway, and Starc and Johnson are good with the bat. The rest are a worry.

As much as I love Haddin, I can't see him making runs with the bat.

Agree with the sentiments here re our dismissals..

Clarke and Smith will be extremely disappointed getting themselves out the way they did to Ali.

Voges was the worst though. Throwing his bat at one trying to try and smash it over extra cover with 10 mins until stumps was unacceptable.

Thats the 3 4 and 5 - the meat of our order - gifting their wickets away.

On the plus side though, Voges looked right at home in a pressure-cooked test environment before his shot..good looking technique and perfectly suited to English conditions, so he should add serious starch to our middle order. If Watto and Haddin can somehow find some runs in them, we've got an extremely strong batting line up for the rest of the series

Hads likes the ball coming onto the bat and he likes to play off the front foot so this pitch will not suit his hitting, he will need to put his head down and bat as long as he can.

The situation may suit him as the poms have slated him deluxe in the press for dropping Root on a duck so he has a chance to stick it up them with bat in hand.

He's overdue for runs and needs a decent score here.
