He's a legend. Tells it like it is.

And i love hearing his old stories, too. Even though most people don't seem to...

To be number 1, IMO, you need to beat the best in their backyard.

Like RSA just did?

Seriously, for a couple of years I don't think there will be a clear #1 - RSA, Aust, India and Sri Lanka pretty close

Sri Lanka are only decent against minnows and at home with Murali's specially prepared pitches

I'll remove Sri Lanka from the list - next tier

But don't forget that India bitch slapped AUst in India, and RSA towelled Aust in Aust - you can say what you like but it looks very much like all three teams are on a par...

RSA and Australia are on par, India fractionally lower as they hardly win away from home. Yes we were poor in India, but we are 1-0 up in SA, spanked most other countries away from home in recent times.

Yeah, but if you want to be truly regarded as taking the number 1 mantle, you need to beat the number one side away from home. Just 12 months ago, India couldnt do that.

As for RSA towelling Aust. It was hardly a towelling. Going into Day 4 in both the first two tests Australia were in winning positions but let it get away. We also won in Sydney. The series was close, and could have gone 3 zip either way.

Prior the the series before last Australia hadnt beat India away from home in 30+ years. So losing there is hardly a new thing.

RSA towelled us? pretty much every commentator ive heard since has talked about how it was such an even series.

Yeah it was kind of even. But if you look at the end results of the two live tests, RSA won by 6 wickets and 9 wickets. Australia were ahead for periods of both tests.

But just how it used to be so often when Australia were no.1, they'd only be behind for a period and still end up wining by a wide margin.

As RSA did.

I don't think there is much between the top 3 test playing nations, all 3 teams could beat each other on a particular day.

Sure but Australia did that consistently . SA weren't just behind for a period though, they were behind for 75% of the first test. and how often would we then go on to lose two tests in a row ?

And by the way we are still no 1 . And are probably now favourites to retain that position.

We should win convincingly as we play Murali well, although I think Mendis poses a more severe problem as he has more varieties to his action.
