I am so excited for this match and these tests to begin. Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Looking forward to seeing Steyn take 12 wickets in this test and becoming the single fastest bowler to take 250 wickets.

AB de Villiers declared fit for Australia Tests
Firdose Moonda
November 3, 2011

AB de Villiers, South Africa Test vice-captain, has been declared fit to play in the upcoming series against Australia. De Villiers has recovered from a hand injury sustained while training with Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Champions League T20 five weeks ago.

"I went to see the specialist and he was very happy with the recovery process," de Villiers said in Johannesburg. "He said I'm 100% ready to go, so I will be joining up with the Titans tomorrow [Friday] morning for a full nets session."

De Villiers missed out on the Twenty20 and ODI series against Australia, in which he was due to captain the side for the first time. With lack of match practice being a pertinent issue for South Africa, after the rusty showing during the limited-overs leg of the tour, de Villiers has taken measures to ensure he's match-ready by playing for the Titans against the Knights in a One-Day Cup match on Sunday. "If I get through that game, I will be ready for the first Test match," he said.

De Villiers had been itching to get back on the field after his first long lay-off since becoming a regular in the national line-up. "Sitting out, especially during the ODIs, was quite frustrating, but I learnt a lot from the sidelines," he said. "It was the first time in a long time that I was sitting on the side watching the boys play."

What made his absence even more disappointing was that it robbed him of his first chance to captain the team, after being appointed in June. Hashim Amla led the side and de Villiers said he thought Amla "captained very well".

With Graeme Smith in charge for the Tests, de Villiers' next opportunity to lead will come only early next year, when Sri Lanka visit South Africa. De Villiers said he is "excited" about the changes to the Test line-up. "We have two world class spinners in the squad for the first time in a very long time," de Villiers said, referring to Pakistani-born legspinner Imran Tahir receiving his first call up and Paul Harris being retained in the squad. "There's a whole different vibe in the Test team and with Jacques [Rudolph] coming back, there's a different look to the team."

Rudolph makes a return to the squad after five years in exile, during which he played for Yorkshire. He walked away from South African cricket a broken man, having lost form in the latter stages of his 35-match Test career. He returned at the start of the 2010-11 season stronger and more confident, and announced his arrival home by topping the SuperSport Series run charts. This season, he has already scored more than 500 runs in four matches. His recall was widely expected, even by the man himself.

"It was not really a surprise," Rudolph said. "Since October 2010, when I made it pretty clear that I badly wanted to play for the Proteas again, I believe I'd stacked up quite a lot of runs. It's helped that especially in the first three games of this season I've done really well." Rudolph said he is ready to cement his place in the national side. "I'm 30-years-old now, I'm really enjoying my game and I can see myself possibly playing for another couple of years."

Interesting to see which combo of quicks they go with.

For mine I'd go Harris, Johnson and Cummins with Copeland and Johnson missing out.

I really like what I see from Cummins and if we're going to go with youth then he is worth a shot. Copeland hasn't disappointed but I still hold reservations. We'll see.

Johnson deserves a shot in Sth Africa given his performance last time and 9 wickets in the tour match. But if he doesn't perform in this tour? See ya!

Harris is a no-brainer.

I wouldn't have Cummins anywhere near this side. Pathetic that he is even on the tour. Copeland will sadly miss out and the attack will be Harris, Siddle and Johnson with Lyon bowling the spin.

Oh I wouldn't have him on the tour ideally but I don't rate Siddle.

Copeland performs a job..Wickets are a bonus for him..Just keep his end nice & tight..

Harris & Johnson to be our strike bowlers..

Sidds should be competing with Lyon for a spot, not Copeland..Warnie is the only spinner i can remember who prospered in Seth Efrika..

With Sunshine in the side, it will be silly picking 4 pacemen and no spinner

If we cant do the job with 3 quicks and Sunshine (with a spinner as variation), we might as well go home

This is another area where Katich is missed..

He & Clarke could perform the holding spinner role..As we know,it's nowhere near as important a job as it was in Sri Lanka..

Surely we aren't expecting Lyon to win us test matches over there???..

Why talk about something that is non existant? Katich is not in the side, Clarkes back problems are well documented. He might role his over for a few overs, but thats about it

Its about the ability and opportunity to play a spinner for variation, especially if required on a 5th day or a rough patch is generated at one end

I do see you point..& i was indulging myself with the Kat reference..

It's just that i'm still having nightmares about Bryce McGain..I just hope Lyon doesn't get exposed like he did..

I hope we beat these merkins.

It's funny, I love the Ashes series because it's an old rivalry, beating the poms is awesome but I can generally tip my hat at them when they do well (eg last series they deserved to win, playing good cricket). When it comes to the Saffers I just want to beat those smug, arrogant yet for the most part hilariously unsuccessful wankers

You need a spinner in the team, especially since we have Watson as a 4th seamer. Copeland does a job and is reliable but he really has no strike power at all which IMO will be his downfall.

Katich rarely bowled anyway and I doubt he would have gotten a bowl over there unless they were 5/500

AMEN!!

Cretins the lot of them and the shit stain on the underpants of cricket with the cum stain known as Indian. Losing to South Africa A in the Ashes means no hat tipping to the soap dodgers though.

They're still slightly less merkiny than India and England, although Johan 'the White Murali' Botha certainly has a very punchable face.

9.45 am There's bad news up front - the rain has just started bucketing down at Newlands. It has been overcast all day, and showers were part of the forecast, but we were hoping they'll stay away. No such luck. Reminds me of last year when it poured at Centurion on the first day of the season, ahead of the first Test against India. There was a mini-flood outside the ground with the Hennops river overflowing and taking cars along with it. And yet, some five hours later, we had action! We may not face that kind of a delay today, but the toss is surely likely to be pushed. The players have rushed out of the ground, abandoning their warm-ups for the moment, and covers are converging across the turf.
