So let's unpack your latest optimism.
Firstly they aren't 1000 to 1. These are premium athletes at their physical peak in the best training facilities in the world, at the cutting edge of sport science .
Our 2 biggest stars went there just to tap into their science around recovery.
These are the biggest, fastest, most agile, strongest... the best f**king athletes in the world! You think..1000 to 1 🤔🤦‍♂️
And 1 to 2 years? ... yeah ! Outside of 6 and 7 what makes our game so good is it isn't complicated!!!
An already pro athlete learning 1 one the most basic sports is easy!
They play 1 of the most complicated, they will find it easy.

The next thing is, it isn't just players he's talking about. A couple of players that made a small impact at a college level trying their hands down under at a collision sports will spark interest from fans and broadcasters in the US .
Do you remember how many Australians turned in to watch Hayne?? Btm making the switch the other way- more complicated sport... at a later age .. and making it to the NFL.
Thank god we have PVD , otherwise we'd be stuck with some narrow minded Muppet.
Hah they are totally different sports! They require different skills and different physical attributes. It’d take 5 years for the poor buggers to learn how to make 30 tackles in game without carking it!
But hey American basketballers play basketball in australia so why wouldn’t it work? Pure Vlandys genius!

Agreed. Let’s not even try. Anything. Let’s just do nothing.
It’s a laughable thing to try. Y’all want to make fun of AFL and the whole ‘if we can just get 1% of China’ BS and don’t realise the US is the same white elephant market. Also if you genuinely want to create a pathway like this it takes a ton of investment which the NRL simply isn’t willing to do. That’s why this pops up every few years before vanishing back to whence it came.

There is plenty of talent left in Aus, NZ, PNG and even the UK up for grabs. I don’t know why we need pie in the sky plans like this when investing the money closer to home will have far bigger benefits.

Edit: please that the stuff about 20 teams be real though. I know I’m indulging in day dreams now but boy it would be great to see the NRL lay out a plan to reach that target and give the teams time to start preparing.

“If you don't play in the NFL, there are thousands that sit there. There are 20-year-old and 18-year-old kids… if we really want to really grow the game and market, why aren't we looking over there?”

eh? College players finish college around 22/23 years of age on avg, you’d think he’d know this as he’s obviously studied the possibilities in so much depth lol

I'd concentrate on spending money in Australia, NZ, UK and the Pacific first, then after that Rugby Union would be a far better bet in terms of recruiting players who can both attack and defend and have stamina to last more then for short bursts.

Those without central national team contacts playing in the Currie Cup and NPC would be the best bet.

So you know more about the game than Nick pilotis ?

It's funny isn't it. The most powerful people in the sport make a statement and they are completely dismissed by the anonymous nobody's here.
Imagine being that arrogant 😳
Can we stop acting like this is some fresh new idea being suggested for the first time? Many people before have suggested this, shut these ‘anonymous nobodies’ on here have been talking about this as long as I’ve posted here which must be coming on 2 decades.

Its never amounted to anything fruitful because the amount of investment is too great for the potential reward and the idea is only ever brought up as a ‘hey wouldn’t this be beat’ rather than something they intend to go through with.

If the NRL can actually set up a proper pathway for these fellas to make it into the NRL then go for it. I don’t think it’s good value for money or a realistic idea and until I see actual concerted efforts to make it happen I don’t believe that the likes of politis or PVL are actually serious about this.

Well point taken but a few things on that. Firstly , sure it's been discussed but we've never actually tried it, certainly not properly. Secondly, the games never been in a strong enough position financially and otherwise for it to be legitimately viable, which it now is. Thirdly, with the proposed expansion there's never been a higher demand for talent. Fourthly, we've never had someone running the game of V’landys calibre before who might just pull the trigger on such a bold move!

So yeah, a lots changed!!

This is a pipe dream that gets mentioned all the time. It’s not happening and we should all just forget about it.
It's worse than that, it's a pipe dream that gets mentioned all the time by basically every single sports administrator the world over. Anybody that's actually tried it has quickly found that it's way more expensive than they expected, and that there's way less interest from non-drafted American athletes than they thought there would be.

They totally underestimate just how much time and money it will take to teach even the most gifted athlete the ins and outs of a new sport, and that non-drafted American athletes are all university educated men who have an expectation of earning millions of dollars as a professional athlete. Most undrafted athletes whom might be interested in trying out quickly change their minds when they find out about the value of the minimum wage contract they'd be expected start out on, and what the top earners are getting in their contracts.

The AFL tried this about a decade ago. IIRC they only got three guys whom ended up getting a run in the AFL, all ex-basketballers BTW, and only two of those guys, Jason Holmes and Mason Cox, ended up as solid first graders. It was a very heavy investment of resources for only two guys.

Now none of this is to say that the NRL shouldn't explore holding combines in the US, or looking to develop talent there in some other manner. Why not give it a crack if they've got the money and time to do it, just keep your expectations of what's achievable reasonable.

You could poach 100 players from rugby union worldwide that aren’t under national team contracts and in most cases double or triple their salaries and still keep to the salary cap. The NRL should view the $39 million combined salary cap for teams 18 to 20 as their warchest to raid union.

With the latest expansion going 2 from 2. Packed out grounds and tight games and record viewers! It's suggested that we're going to 20 teams sooner rather than later!
Has there been a more optimistic time in our game?

Great to have goals, I think it will happen but I don't think in the timeline the article states.

Though it is refreshing having RL having ambition
