I think there is a very similar feel to both sides & I'm guessing Smith may have built the 2005 side based on the design of the 2001 model and just added a bit more size and grunt to it.

Interesting similarities in the halves with both 5/8's capable of filling a variety of positions and both not actually having started their first grade careers as 5/8's. Both halfbacks have very good kicking games and are also very good goal kickers but are not necessarily game breaking players.

Both sides have hookers capable of breaking a game wide open from dummy half yet are both unlikely to play more than 50 mins a game.

The back 5 have a very similar feel about them with the 2005 model having a bit more size to it. Plenty of speed out wide.

All 3 starting back rowers capable of going for 80 mins.

Big impact players on both benches (Ryan / Solomona v Widders / Afamasaga / Cannings) and a utility half/hooker wearing the 14 (still to be determined in the 2005 model).

On paper I'd take the 2005 side.

But 3 things the 2001 side had that can't be seen on paper is FORM, CONFIDENCE and CONSISTENCY.

It would be interesting to see how the 2001 side would be playing today if they were still together, I think they may struggle more than we think.

One big thing was lack of injuries.
We had the same team on the field for most of that seaason and have had huge problems trying to do that since.

It certainly looks like a really good team for next year...

In my opinion, this is where we have the 2001 team beat:

It will be interesting to see what happens with Thorman & Dykes. Alot of talk about both leaving but still no developments as yet...? :-k

I really feel the key to our success will be Michael Witt
just like jason taylor...when witt was developing and playing well last year we got the results
hopefully his profile rises

Cronulla are expected to finalise a deal next week with Parramatta to release five-eighth Adam Dykes back to the club where he began his career.
