2007 - A year of discovery and rebuilding

Well it appears as though 2007 will be a rebuilding year for us. While I thought this year was meant to be our rebuilding year, it appears that now with a new coach that will extend to next year.

With the introduction of the Gold Coast to the competition in 2007 and the increase in salary cap, that made the player talent dispersal quite competitive with teams having to compete against both current clubs, others and a new franchise to either purchase or retain players.

This year, we've seen another tremendous exodus of players to rival clubs with Penrith currently only picking up two nuff nuffs, Nathan Smith...a talented Centre/Winger who has been plagued by knee injuries since making his debut 3 seasons ago. The past two seasons he has been lucky to play 4-5 games due to 3 knee reconstructions. He is back in PL at centre last week and this week and it could be an indication of where he will be at Penrith.

The second signing is Brendan Worth. A young prop from Newcastle who has struggled to be a regular starter for Newcastle Premier League. I'd be a liar if I said I thought this was a great signing because I believe it is an absolutely dreadful signing, and there are so many other better props who would play for a minimum $50,000 contract at Panthers. My choice would be Jack Afamasanga, but he is now signed with Manly or re-signed with Parra...they had the foresight to observe the talent he had. Just needs a kick up the arse, something Elliot would have provided.

But while the new signings are not well known, we have since been told for next year that we will be developing our juniors and placing faith in them to do the job for us. Matty Elliot has taken a rags team in Canberra this year, to the top 8 on the back of the notion that everyone must play for each other.

If at the start of the year you looked at the Canberra roster and ours, you would be stuffed as an independent person to say Penrith didn't have the superior roster. Elliot instilled something in Canberra that we didn't have this year. Teamwork, working for each other and the self belief that they were good enough. They talked in the defensive line, something we did not. They put in attacking kicks, something we did not. They used angles and decoy runners and second phase play...something we did only for 5 games the whole season...we won 4 of them.

I guess what i'm trying to say is, when Elliot comes into the organisation, we will hopefully see a squashing of ego's...something I think has plagued us the last two years...not enough games where we play as a team, rather playing for individual honours. These players are quite evident in our organisation and its quite embarrassing for me to see these players....some are players that fans think "put in every week", when in reality they don't and are quite over-rated in my eyes, because they arn't team players. Some are actually very high profile.

I think if Elliot can come in, and smack down these ego's to the point where he reminds them why they play the game then we will be all the better for it. If these high profile, overpaid players can't get that and don't like it, then they can ship out as far as i'm concerned. Its no secret really who I believe these players are.

But when all is said and done, we are still inactive in the marketplace to the point where it appears as though we are tremendously weakened with regards to our depth for next year. But what options do we have available? What players are left on the open market? This will be analysed in the next post.

I believe that we have only put faith in the juniors because of failure to do anything in the market place, that’s why this statement has only come out now, I wish the Panthers management were proactive, or even reactive, it just seems like its not active!!!!
While we have some talent, its still very young, one or 2 rookies a game are ok, but we will have +6 and heaven help us if we get afew injuries,

I think Penrith will field the youngest and perhaps the most inexperienced squad (overall) in the NRL next year.

To be honest, a finals berth would be asking too much. But then again, the same was said about Canberra, and they had Elliott.

I await 2007 with much anticipation.

What i would like to see happen next year:

  • Michael Jennings, Tim Grant, Junior Moors, Keith Peters, Steve O'Bierne, Jarrod Sammut and Geoff Daniella to get some time in First Grade next year, whether that means only one game or the whole season. A couple of these players also to be included in the top 25 for next season.
  • Players in this years strong Flegg side to get plenty of game time in Premier League.
  • More of this years Ball winning squad to play Flegg, including our four NSW under 17's reps.
  • To go back to back in Ball and Mats this year, hearing alot of good things about this years crop of under 15's, who will play Mats next year. Apparently the best group of youngsters through in awhile.
All these talented juniors we have at the club have to be carefully promoted up the grades, as we havent signed many players, there isnt many players to stop this progression occuring.

I think that's a given considering our recruitment for next year.

Consider this...

Let's assume that Penrith recruits no one else between now and the start of next season. Given the management, this is sure to happen!

This would be our squad (in brackets is total first grade matches):

1. Rhys Wesser (147)
2. Michael Gordon (17)
3. Michael Jennings (0)
4. Luke Lewis (107)
5. Luke Rooney (115)
6. Peter Wallace (1)
7. Craig Gower (214)
8. Joel Clinton (115)
9. Luke Priddis (246)
10. Matthew Cross (24)
11. Tony Puletua (166)
12. Trent Waterhouse (93)
13. Shane Rodney (75)

14. Frank Pritchard (61)
15. Paul Aiton (14)
16. Bryan Norrie (23)
17. Matthew Bell (11)

18. Keith Peters (1)
19. Junior Moors (0)
20. Nathan Smith (7)
21. Brendan Worth (6)
22. David Thompson (<50?)
23. Jarrad Sammut (0)
24. Nick Youngquest (22)
25. Mark O'Halloran (31)

The top 17 looks quite strong - plenty of experience. But the depth... full of inexperience.

I'm anticipating that next year Gordon will shift to centre and Youngquest will be wing. Jennings will probably only get into firsts through injury. Though with Lang gone hopefully I am wrong.

Youngquest will NOT play wing. He can't play right hand side that's why Gordon got promoted instead of him. Jennings will play right centre and from what I've read on P.I Trindall has been promised 1st crack at 5/8

.

I believe the main reason why our promoted juniors did so well for us back in 2003, was because they had all come from junior clubs where they had become used to a culture of winning, and they entered 1st grade with that bit of cockiness form having won all the way to the top grade. Up to that point they hadn't really experienced the agony of defeat.

That coupled with the general over abundance of the enthusiasm of youth, along with the rejuvenation of enthusiasm of the senior players like Girds and Gower which came about from spending time with the younger guys, gave them all the impetus to go out as they did with that constant "nothing to lose" attitude.

God I wish we could get that back again

so maybe someone can tell a poor simple fool who didn't see much of canberra this year what sort of style of play we might expect elliot to employ next year at Penrith, ignoring all the stuff about the team spirit, grit and determination canberra have become renownd for this season?

In the later half of the year I saw Canberra move the ball around and play an expansive game, exciting football, kind of what we did against Canterbury.

On the most part they had a solid defensive structure and good goalline defence.

They use attacking kicks in the opposition red zone (through Jason Smith), and thats something i really look forward too. They run angles and also use decoy runners. Basically everything we should have used to our advantage this year, they did it.

i think trindall and gower will make a very solid halfs combination next year , i think he would be a better option then wallace at the moment.

I suspect it is more likely Luke Lewis may be groomed for 5/8 in 2007.

The emergence of the likes of Jennings, Daniella, Blair, Gordon and even Ahio and Liam Campbell for starting centre positions will limit the opportunities for Craig Trindall who I think will be more of a back up. My gut feelings only.

I think Trindall and Wallace will slug it out initially for the #6 next year. Lewis should stay in the centres because, let's face it, we're quite skinny in those ranks at the moment. But he definitely played well in the few games earlier this season at five-eighth. Maybe he can be moulded into a Girds type player, who had the number 3 on his back, but played like a five-eighth.

IMO:

Wallace should be 5/8.

Aiton lock.

Trindall off the bench in #17.

So we'd have:

1. Rhys Wesser
2. Michael Gordon
3. Michael Jennings?
4. Luke Lewis
5. Luke Rooney
6. Peter Wallace
7. Craig Gower
8. Joel Clinton
9. Luke Priddis
10. Matt Cross
11. Tony Puletua
12. Shane Rodney
13. Paul Aiton

14. Frank Pritchard
15. Matthew Bell
16. Trent Waterhouse
17. Craig Trindall

Although personally. I'd like Lewis/Youngquest as our wingers. Gordon/Jennings as our centres. And Rooney to be dropped.
