Actually I think its had the opposite effect. If you make it seem everyone's at the footy, people are more likely to go. Make every game an event. That's why they need more advertising, and PR about each game each week. Get people talking about it.

Well just thinking about it... Maybe the NRL can have a "Bring your office to the Footy" night (For an all sydney game on friday night at Telstra or SFS)??? Encourage employers and there workers to head out to the footy with cheaper bulk tickets and advertise the F... out of the concept???? Just a thought.

LebaneseForces the Tigers have the bye this weekend. So If the Doggies lose on the weekend then both sides will be on 4 points. Important game for both sides to keep in touch with the top 8.

Woops LOL...

This is what sh*ts me about Sydneysiders... There is NO reason why this game or the Bulldogs V Rabbitohs game or any game like that shouldn't draw 40K+, we need to start changing the culture and make the footy a MUST go to experience... But How?

they've promoted the hell out of monday night football in canberra, and it looks like it's worked. in saying that, weve been blessed with some pretty warm weather lately and once winter hits the less night games we get the better.

"The game seems to be going well, I CBF going, they'll get a good crowd anyway" etc.

People dont go to the games because they want to see leagues crowd averages go up. The majority will go to support their team and be entertained. Alot wouldnt even have any idea what the figures are.

But its true that more people equals more atmosphere that adds to the excitement of the game. So promoting the fact that leagues crowd levels are up isnt a bad thing. People like big events and bemoan small crowds. Its like when a new american show is promoted on the tv. "Over 15million people watched its debut in america!"

We could say "Over 47,000 people watched the Titans beat the broncos last week, make sure you get your tickets to see Manly take on the Titans this Sunday, Brookvale Oval, 2pm!!!

Something like that sounds ok i think. Im no advertising exec though

Round 7 should be solid. The Anzac Day fixture will be harmed a little by the fact that it's going to be contested by 15 v 16, actually, after the byes next week that may not be the case.

But in 2005 we were 1 from 5 as well, and the amount of St George fans in that 33k figure was massive. So there's hope.

Congrats to fans down in Canberra. And congrats to the Raiders tonight too.

ANZAC game always seems to be the start of something positive for Saints, even if it is a close loss. The numbers will be there.

Hopefully the Roosters defence is as bad as it was tonight.

They'll be missing Nate Myles as well. A judiciary imposed 6 week holiday should be on the cards for that hit on Zillman.

Ok i did a heap of research into this. So bear with me as i spill it out. This is also in reply to the post about how melbournes had some success.

Upgraded Stadiums
Both English soccer and AFL realised that with modern stadiums they could attract a bigger crowd. AFL put $30m into building Telstra Dome for this reason and have some 4 teams playing home games there. They have the MCG. Swans and Brisbane have quality stadiums.

League hasnt done this yet. Newcastle has but Campbelltown, Leichardt, Manly, Kogarah, Cronulla havent. Ie, Melbournes Olympic Park is very run down and so struggles to get big crowds. Look what happened to Melbourne Victory, took games to the Dome and got an avg of 30,000. Also many of these reach capacity so an increase in crowds is limited by capacity constraints Manly cant increase their avg crowd by much as they have no more room.

Memberships
Secondly and most importantly. Memberships! The total amount of memberships for AFL teams last yaer was 519,000. Collingwood had total memberships of 39,000 and avg 63,000 crowd.
Our best team, Brisbane has only 8,944 members. Every team needs to get members. Since they have a season membership its easy for them to go to the match. Every AFL club has more members than any NRL team. Members are involved with the team, through events and the members website increasing fan loyalty.
AFL teams go on membership drives with a goal of getting 30,000 members (for example), they advertise. Sydney Swans have shoppa dockets for a 3 match superpass. If they cant afford season tickets, they can get a supporters pack where they can get a ticket to one game, hat, newsletters amd website membership where they can be offered tickets latter on to more matches (its easier to get repeat business then attract a first time purchaser). Ads like, buy a jersey and get a ticket to a match.
Even if they fork out $70 for a supporters pack with only one ticket, they will be entitled to receiving emails and newsletters with offers and will most likely go to another match.

Benefits of increased membership:
-increased revenue
-increased crowds
-increased sponsorships from a larger fan base
-stronger fan loyalty even in periods of losses

Games should be advertised
Every Premier league soccer side has on the first page of their website a massive ad for the next home game with a link to buy tickets.
Souths now advertise in both the local paper and in the daily telegraph each week to get people to their next game. Their crowds have gone up heaps.
Think outside of the box, like what souths did with the Bulldogs match and ticket to the Easter Show.

Special Event Rounds
AFL does this very well. Heritage round with every team in a set retro jersey. Rivalry round, where every team plays a side that they have had a strong rivalry with, ie, Bulldogs v Roosters (generally comes from times when they have versed each other in GF). Derby week, where each team plays against their neighbour.

These are some things i have looked into but really the most important thing is the memberships.

Just for people to have some facts

AFL crowds have for the first three rounds have increased by 22% according to Demetriou. I checked this and it is correct. So then i thought id check the NRL figures for its first 5 rounds.

2006 - Total = 617,995 Avg = 17,657

2007 - Total = 740,591 Avg = 18,514 Increase of 4.9%

Although so far crowds for NRL are up by 18.7% on 2006's avg for the season.

2006 - 15,601

2007 - 18,513

This is not supposed to be an NRL v AFL thing. Just thought some people would be interested.

Teams up on last years season avg;
Brisbane
Canberra
Cronulla
Manly
Melbourne
New Zealand
North Queensland
Penrith
Souths
Sydney

Teams struggling compared to last year
Canterbury-Bankstown
Newcastle
Parramatta
St-George
Wests
