NRL to break 3 million tonight

NRL Fri, 03 Sep 2010 02:00:00

The 2010 Telstra Premiership will tonight smash through the three million attendance mark for just the fourth time on the way to recording the biggest regular season attendance in Rugby League history.

With the final round of the season kicking off tonight, this year’s regular season attendance already stands at 2,996,907.

By the end of the weekend it will have surpassed the record-breaking 2009 season total of 3,081,874.

Ahead of a thrilling last round in which seven of the eight matches can have a bearing on the finals race, NRL Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, today thanked club members and fans for supporting the Telstra Premiership in record numbers.

“It speaks volumes for the excitement of our competition, the courage and skill of our players and coaches, the success of the game’s club membership programs and the passion of our fans that we are once again preparing to break a host of attendance records,” Mr Gallop said.

“For some members and fans, this weekend is their last chance to see their team play and to say farewell to some of the champion players who are moving on or retiring.

“There are a number of exciting matches in the last round and the finals race could again go down to the last game of the season.”

We are, but the games tomorrow are more than likely to drag us a few hundred away from that, meaning we need to rely on 29k @ AAMI, 16k @ Brookie and a full house of 18k at Kogarah... and even then it's a stretch.

but if the storm weren't cheating before anyway, their success and crowds of previous years would've declined.. leading to a lower average this year anyway

great crowds tonight btw

Guys we are 11 people off breaking the all-time average.

We need 100,808 more spectators this round to beat it. It's going to be close.

Sat PAR v NZW - 14k? <- get the feeling this might get more though
Sat PEN v CRO CU - 13k <- anybody know when Panthers will pull in more than 15k again?
Sat NQL v SYD DF - 11k
Sun MEL v NWC AA - 29k
Sun MAN v CBY BV - 15k <- hopefully can get 17k+
Sun STG v SOU WJ - 18k

Total = 100,000

If Eels, Panthers and Sea Eagles come out for the final home games, then we'll get it.

It would also set the record for the largest closing round and would be the 3rd largest round ever overall.

We can always trust the usual suspects to stuff things up for us.

29k @ AAMI, 17.5/18k at Kogarah, it's all down to how many show up at Brookie tomorrow... with finals on the line for the Eagles one would like to think they'd pack it out.

So we've broken the season aggregate record!

So now we need 66,395 over the final 3 matches.

So there's games locked in:
Melbourne approx 29,000 - I believe the capacity is actually 30,050 but lets assume some won't show up

Kogarah approx 18,000 - about the average of recent capacity ratings, but has had 18,500 recently

So...

Manly need - 19395+

Anyone want to make a bet on it?

Unfortunately we are going to fall just short!

Unless St George decide to play Souths at the SCG overnight ;)

despite it being a sell out, i just can't see 29k turning up at AAMI

so no, we won't break the record average which is a shame..

Well it'll still the most attendances in the regular season and the 2nd highest average ever.

There's no AFL on in Melbourne tomorrow. Hopefully the weather clears up. If it does that $1 entertainment will mean a full house.

It's all up to Manly now. It would be their biggest crowd all year. Hopefully the fact that this is do or die for them means something. Hopefully some of the dogs fans who didn't get to the Monday night game make the journey as well.

Let's cast a gaze forward to the finals. I for one really hope the Warriors get a home final. There's no Union internationals on and it will sell out.

Week 1:
Dragons vs Sea Eagles/Raiders/Rabbitohs @ Kogarah - 18,500!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Panthers vs Raiders/Sea Eagles @ Penrith - 16,000??????????
Tigers vs Roosters @ SFS - 42,000
Titan vs Warriors @ Skilled - 27,200

Week 2:
It's either 2 of -

Tigers @ SFS
Titans @ Skilled
Sea Eagles @ SFS
Raiders @ Canberra
Roosters @ SFS
Warriors @ Mt Smart/Eden Park
Rabbitohs @ Stadium Oz

Week 3:
It either 2 of-
Dragons @ SFS
Panthers @ Stadium Oz
Tigers @ SFS/Stadium Oz
Titans @ Lang Park
Warriors @ Mt Smart/Eden Park
Roosters @ SFS

If there's 2 Sydney teams in a preliminary final match, it should be played at Stadium Australia no matter what.
