Was doing some research today.

For all those wanting Coote at 5-8:

In 15 games in 2011 - 110 tackles made, 9 ineffective tackles, 42 tackles missed. And you want that defending in the front line and on our goal line when we already have a defensive liability in Luke Walsh....you are nuts.

That should put an end to that discussion once and for all.

Coote needs to be Fullback or not in the team.

Gordon needs to be Centre if that is the case...I concede he shouldn't be on the wing. I just hope we spread the ball with EARLY ball...for once.

Gordon and Jennings in the centres will help Jennings a lot. We will be a threat on both sides now. Last few years all the other team had to worry about was Purtell on one side and he's the worst back iv'e ever seen play that many games.

To be fair Mick most fullbacks defensive stats wouldn't look good, but I agree having both Walsh and Coote in the frontline would put a lot of stress on our defence. I wouldn't mind seeing Gordon at centre round one in place of Tighe just to see what he's like. Certainly for the balance of our attack to have Burns, Austin and Jenko down one side, Walsh, Lewis and Flash down the otherwith Coote chipping in and chasing kicks, we'd be quite potent and give the hookers great options.
I think Gordon is the superior fullback at this point also, but lets not forget Coote is a fantastic fullback who was leading the Dally Ms for a good chunk of 2010 and was cripple by injury for most of his time on the field last year.

If Gordon is in the centres, then I'm happy with the team.

Lets also not forget that Coote offers plenty in the general kicking department

Having a 2 to 1 Make to miss ratio is not something you want in the defensive line.

I'd eventually like to see:

1. Lachlan Coote
2. Brad Tighe/Geoff Daniella/David Simmons
3. Michael Jennings
4. Michael Gordon
5. Andrew Pelasio
6. Harry Seijka
7. Luke Walsh

That's what I'd like to see by the end of the year.

Exactly.

What Coote can provide is fantastic kick-chase, a 3rd option at kicker but he can chime in on attack as a 2nd five-eight...but he can only do that on a part time basis. Asking him to handle the load as a five-eight in attack & defense is too much for him imo. Not yet anyway. But having him be a 2nd five-eight and linking with our centre/wingers and Walsh on the other side gives us added dimension.

what i meant is his on line defence will be fine because he wont have to tackle much defending on the wing & that he has shown he can handle it aerially

Not sure about others, but my having Coote at 5/8 is more looking toward a halves pairing of him and Harry Siejka. Although there's big talk around Luke Walsh this season and with any luck the hype is delivered for a change.

Based on what we've seen of Walsh in the halves so far, I can't see him being part of a premiership side... and if that potential isn't there what's the point in sticking with him? But that was under Matt Elliott and god knows how much he held back Walsh. Peter Wallace goes from us to the Broncos and is playing State of Origin in his first season under Wayne Bennett, then after Bennett leaves is back to the same fringe first grader that we had basically.

Ivan Cleary looks to work well with halves aswell. We saw him take James Maloney and Shaun Johnson and develop them into a Grand Final halves pairing. He encouraged them to play what was infront of them and if he can get Walsh to do the same then Walsh just might be able to deliver on the hype. He's pretty quick and when he decides to take on the line often has decent results, it's just a matter of whether him doing it more then once a month or so will still return decent results.

I dunno if it's just me, but I'm starting to feel like Coote is a bit overrated around here.

I mean he was a gun in the 20's, and showed some good form when he played City/Country.

But lets be real, he was always behind Dugan and a whole host of others for the NSW fullback gig.

He's small, weak, not lightning fast. His strengths are kick chase (mostly an effort thing, Wade was the same), aerial skills, kicking, and pretty good footwork and passing.

Having said that, I've rarely seen him break the line with pace, power or footwork. Likewise I've rarely seen him put someone through a gap with his ball skills (ala Lewis).

Sure 5/8 might work for him, but it seems many around here are saying it as a given, I'm not so sure.

Pretty much, but I wouldn't be all that surprised if he got the fb spot simply because he's the only player with a decent long kicking game.

Michael Gordon - 101 games, 54 tries @ 53.47%
Luke Lewis - 194 games, 87 tries @ 44.85%
Brad Tighe - 62 games, 26 tries @ 41.94%
Rhys Wesser - 177 games, 113 tries @ 63.84%

I'd like to see Coote or Wesser out on the wing keeping a decent try scoring rate in a Matt Elliott coached side. The only time wingers get the ball is when the opposition kick it to them or they come in for hitups and dummy half runs.

Atleast Ivan Cleary should have our centres and wingers getting more ball with more space. That change alone could go close to doubling our chances at winning games.

Warriors have no room for Fisiiahi or Inu in the starting team and Newcastle kept Naiqama on the cheap. And we have Tighe, Earl and Simmons fighting over 2-3 spots. Shit is depressing.

Im backing Jennings for a big year, far to good to have another year like the last and we have been hearing good things coming out of the pre season.
