Not necessarily useless...

Of course not. Jason's an absolute freak, probably a future international.

Just because Warner's not as good as him doesn't mean he (Warner) isn't capable of becoming a first grader.

If the NZ dominance keeps up I reckon they'll adjust the competition to Under 23's.

I guess that's one way of evening things up.

But if they pushed it up to 23s they'd need to bring in some other category between it and SG Ball. So they'd probably have an under 20s comp anyway even if it wasn't as important as the current NYC. They would probably go back to calling it Jersey Flegg.

But under 23s is problematic for another reason - all the best players would already be in their clubs' fulltime squads, so any under 23s comp would be full of second tier players.

Maybe an under 23s comp could just outright replace reserve grade? But then you'd need a way for clubs to give their over 23s some match fitness when they come back from injury, or even somewhere for them to drop their out-of-form over 23s.

Remember though we didn't waltz right through the grand final this year, had the Cowboys kicked their last conversion they'd have won the GF, it was a very close thing. And Souths were the minor premiers in 2010.

The strength of the Warriors shows that clubs are wrong to base selection for 20s on form in Mathews and Ball.
The Newcastle games against the Warriors were the most useful games of the season, because they clearly showed that many players could not tackle players who had played and trained as seniors, as all the Warriors have.
The best player for the Knights this season was Sam Anderson, who played seniors for Kurri Kurri Bulldogs in the Newcastle local comp last year. I expect to see a lot more 19 year olds who have made firstgrade in the local comp get a run next year.

Poupou Escobar - Ideally the ARL would make reserve grade the national grade and all the other players would player in their local colts competition until they're eligible. The only aspect you risk losing is the education the ARL passes onto all the Toyota Cup players but I don't think there's anything stopping them from running those camps for players of those ages and ensuring they've got a fallback if their League career doesn't work out.

Really just food for thought as I don't see the NYC changing anytime soon.

SpaceMonkey - You're right, it was never a sure thing but I'm speaking hypothetically if the Kiwis continue their success for 3 or more seasons I could see things changing.

Let's not discount the Warriors success in 2008 either. If it wasn't for one of the flukiest tries in the history of flukiest tries (in the grand final with Greg Dowling in Origin) they would have been on their way to a Grand Final and for all we know could have won another championship to make it 3/4. But then again, it wasn't like I was complaining at the time. :D

Warriors should always be near the top in this competition. They have the ability to lure some of the best rugby union talent that is just leaving school as playing u20s in the NRL is far more appealing then playing in rugby academys around NZ.

Look out for Braxton Stanley, comes from the same Auckland Grammar 1st XV Omar Slaimankhel and Koni Hurrell are from. Also they got Ngataua Hukatai who was a member of the NZ secondary schools rugby team and Albert Vete who was captain for the St Kents 1st XV who won the Auckland comp and NZ Co-Ed title. Pity they didnt get Roger Tuivasa-Scheck though

Please warriors arent the best because of their rugby players.
They are the best because of the number of talented league players in auckland and the quality of their own development system.

Purely on the local league talent in Auckland alone they could field two NYC teams that could compete in NZRL.
Nevermind areas like Wellington & Waikato

They dont even need to sign rugby players.
But they would be dumb not to trial and entice some of the creme of the rugby scene.

Yes, Ngani Lumape, roger sheck & hukatai made the NZ rugby side but all played league at junior or

Lumape & Sheck played league this year. Both were selected to trial for NZ 18s league side.

Alot will depend on where Ben hampton spends most of the season. he's not looking out of place with the top squad so far this pre-season. Solomona has also spent all pre-season with the first team, could easily end up POTY. Matt McGahan will be a year more acclimatised to league and keep an eye out for Richie kennar and Pride Petterson Robati when/if they get a run.
