I think it's because they want to make the mascots as menacing as possible, and the only way that's possible for Souths & Easts is to portray them as robots.

They still failed

I have to give credit where it's due, this is pretty awesome. It gets you amped up for the footy like no intro has since Simply the Best. Props to Channel 9.

Yes, the current intro is excellent. The other one that I used to love was some time back in the late 80s. I think Phil Blake featured prominently. Can't remember the details but I used to think it was cool.
