If the Saffa's are smart they will let MMarsh scrape together a nothing 50 and then have him locked in for the rest of the series.

I must admit i dont watch cricket as much anymore ... but our current team seems totally shit for tests ... our best (most likely) batsmen, warner and smith, are not very good technically ... they score so many runs from risky slashes ... maybe thats the new way to play test cricket, sling hard and hope

Don't think they'd even bother. It'd be short odds him being selected for the rest of this series and next regardless of what he actually does

The same 12 are picked for the next test, so he is a cert to play in Hobart.

I think Smith has a different technique. I think he has earns his place in the team but agree that he can look awkward at times. He is a player that is suffering from the lack of stability around him as he keeps being moved around the order.

Warner isn't a Test player. Don't get me wrong, fantastic batsman, but he doesn't have the temperament to build a score. It's all about scoring as quickly as he can rather than occupying the crease.

Burns should have never been dropped. He can occupy the crease for long periods.

The continual selection of the Marsh brothers continues to baffle me. They shouldn't be anywhere near a Test side.

Rod Marsh was a great player but as a selector his decisions are confusing.

Maybe that is why he is stepping down as a selector at the end of the summer.

Smith is out of form ATM, but in form he is damn near impossible to get out.
Disagree about Warner, but I do think he needs some development on his own game management. I don't mind him taking squeeze singles in tests, but yesterday should have been all about him carrying his bat until stumps. Maybe he's just jack of the shit coming after him that he decided to put more pressure on them.
And given the way Burns has played since being dropped, he's falling well down pecking order.
Bar the Darsh brothers and while I was wrong when he first got selected Voges ain't going to get better from now, the team is probably the best we have, they are just horribly horribly out of form. I don't get the insistence, even at a professional level, to stick with incumbents just because next test they may reenter form. It's gambler's fallacy. We should have players developing in the background so when a Joe Burns or Khawaja start playing shit, they can be subbed out for a test or series to work on the issues on why they are shit, rather than completely dropping them all together to take their shit form back to domestic level and play shit there and have to wait seasons to be recalled while watching the other players play like gash

Burns scored a hundred against the Aussie attack a week before this test, tbh.

I got no problem with Burns. In fact he highlights more where the issues lie.
He gets dropped because he struggles with spin. In spin friendly Sri Lanka. Against spin crazy Sri Lanka.
Goes back to Shield, plays a decent innings before a couple of failures (probably shitty because he didn't get selected).
But let's not select him even though we have no problem with his play against non-spin. And we're playing at the flat & straight WACA. Against very mild spinners. Not like Hobart's going to be anymore spin friendly either

That is sort of my point. He can score runs and quickly. He has never been able to occupy the crease for long periods of time. It's his temperament.

Players like Hayden, and he is a player I just cannot stand, could score quick runs but he could also occupy the crease. An opener IMO should be scoring 100 off 110 balls. It's great to watch but I would rather see them wearing down the opposition like Duminy and Elgar did. It's why De Villiers is such a great batsman. They take the game away.

Warner cannot occupy the crease and this is the time and place when it should have happened. Take the shine off the ball and make them work. It's undoubtedly a different opinion to people who prefer exciting matches but Test matches that are done in three days don't excite me.

Warner is fine, there is absolutely a place in the game for an explosive opener. There's quite a history of successful openers in that vein all over the world tbh.

Our middle order is the issue, not Warner. Smith is struggling for form a little, Voges is ordinary, Marsh is not a six and Nevill is yet to really find form at test level.

With a side with the Marshes and Voges in the top 6 Warner is hardly the problem. He's a match winner and can win games on his own, yes he is frustrating at times but you just have to let him go at times. He makes it much easier for his team mates when he is going and can win a game in a session.

Warner is a game turner, we need him

Our soft underbelly is our middle order, or lack of it, we need to look for a no 6 batsman, Marto did the job for ages and we were never obsessed with a no 6 who could bowl back then but we were very sucessfull

was good to see Neville get among the runs, he is class with the gloves but needs those fifties to cement his spot
