I just spent 6 weeks in the states for work and went to 3 baseball stadiums (Dodgers, Padres, Giants) and an NFL pre-season game at the LA Coliseum. The baseball game tickets were really cheap ($20-$30) the NFL game we paid $60 a pop for pretty shitty seats (the Coliseum is a piece of crap) but the one thing that was similar was the high cost of food and drink at both MLB and the NFL events. Beers ranged from $13-$16 depending on what brand, hot dogs ranged from $6-$8. A box of corn chips with canned cheese on top that was paraded as 'nachos' was generally the cheapest option but would still set you back $6-$8. I grabbed a brisket burger at the NFL, a combo of that and a packet of chips was $16. These are all yank prices.

Parking at the LA Coliseum, we drove up a side street and a lady approached us if we wanted to park on her street, we said yes so she moved her car from the curb and we parked in her place. Cost was $40. Other areas ranged from $60-$100 to park.

I know we like to bitch and gripe about how much our games cost to attend but we dont pay anywhere near that much to attend NRL games. I dont know how the average american attends sporting events. Wages over there are a generally a lot lower than ours.

When you have a big target audience to attract you can charge those sorts of prices. Supply and demand.

Watching Todd on 360 indicated to me he wants more games at ANZ and Allianz when both stadiums are fully completed in the new development which in his mind would help crowds. I don't think that will help crowds as much unless he puts on the right games and right scheduling which has one of the big reasons why crowds are down yet was not questioned about it.

It's not wrong, it's a matter of preference. While you have yours, I'd prefer a dry Etihad to watch my team than a wet MCG and I know others who are the same. I would think there's a number of Sydney people that would be tipped over to go to a game on a wet day/night if it were under a roof. There's plenty of people in here who believe that the poor Sydney weather played a massive role in declining crowd numbers early this year. A roof on at least one major Sydney stadium would have insulated this drop in some way.
The crowd figures (even allowing for the difference in capacity) speak for themselves. Fans of clubs who play predominantly at the G hate going to Etihad as a general rule and attendance suffer as a result.

My point remains that a roofed stadium isn't the cure to all Sydney's ills.

That has been their goal for a while, since the stadium strategy for Sydney started to emerge. Sadly the clubs pushed back on it and said they wouldn't be dictated to in giving up home ground advantage.

Ideally you would have a NRL controlled Friday night blockbuster at Allianz and a Sunday afternoon blockbuster (or even better double header) at ANZ every round. NRL to pay the clubs for these games and take all responsibility for marketing and making them massive must do Sydney events. Sadly club self interest will get in the way though and I doubt clubs have the confidence NRL could do it properly anyway.

It was a joke that he wasn't asked about scheduling which is one of the main reasons crowds are shit.

Conflicts of interest I guess.

I think he's right. Create an attendance culture at a handful of venues instead of the range we have at the moment. Part of the issue at the moment with the proliferation of suburban venues we have at the moment is fans not knowing which ground to go to any one week - particularly with SGI and WST.

Wests need to bin Leichardt (its only a stones throw from ANZ anyway and is a dump, keep it for nostalgia round when the old timers can wax lyrical about tinnies on a grass mound). Ideally you'd see them playing a split between ANZ (or even better WSS) and an upgraded Campbelltown.
Dragons new Allianz and most in Wollongong. Playing at 3 stadiums is a bit crazy and doesn't help the cause for upgrading them.

Have to laugh when you google Manly SeaEagles it comes up with nib stadium as home ground before Brookvale :)

Great point PR! Are you available to take the CEO's job? This is exactly what needs to happen in Sydney, it gives the impression that the NRL is a must attend event for casual sporting fans. A phenomenon that the Swans are enjoying at the moment.

The beauty of a double header is reduce costs to put on the show and you can schedule a not so big game as the first one and lead itto the derby blockbuster in the second. one ticket gets admission to both.

ie Manly V Storm 1pm KO, Souths v Bulldogs 3pm KO. (reserve or NSW cup game 11am)
Festivities start at 11am in ANZ precinct with food trucks, bands, kids play zone, meet the players autograph tents etc. Formula 1 do the whole event thing amazingly well, just look there for inspiration. Sunday very much family focused, like magic event in UK you can enter and leave stadium to visit the food and family areas as you please. NRL merchandise for all teams tents (after all we want to attract neutrals as much as fans of the teams taking part) etc. $20 for any NRL member, $50 for family of 4 with a drinks deal, transport included. Its very doable and could see crowds of 30-40k regular at ANZ if done well

Friday night adults focussed. Around the world beer and food village, bands on in the stadium precinct, Start at 6pm with stuff outside the stadium, KO 7:30pm then 9pm till 11pm more stuff in a fanzone outside the ground. Moore park is perfect venue for this. Target 25-35k fans every Friday night.

Lets actually benefit from NRL heartland being in a city of 5million and nine teams creating rivalry and tribalism.

Problem is it takes the clubs to buy into it, and they are as self interested and sht at strategic thinking as the NRLHQ!

I like the double header idea but it won't solve most of the issues. The game day experience is where we lose the fans. This is the fault of each and every home club. The Nrl look after the finals series and the game day experience is 1000 times better. Cheaper ticket deals, free public transport, fun and games, cheaper food packages. If this was the normal weekend of course the fans would start coming back. The storm have shown that to be true. Each club needs pick there act up and make it enjoyable.

People need to realize that sometimes the teams are playing sh!t and that's why no one cares to watch. Schedules are made 6mths/12mnths out from the game and parramatta might be playing well this year but could be horrible by round 5 and there Thursday/Friday night fta game will be boring as bat sh!t. Souths/ bulldogs/ Penrith/ even Broncs had there moments this year where they all played shit but still had prime fta spots. How is anyone to know that would happen. I don't think the nrl having the scheduling rights to the games will fix the ratings issues that much but I really hope the fans at least start coming back.

You're forgetting one thing.... not every team are located near that joint.
Be f**ked if I'd go there in a Friday night.

Just bought 5 tix, pax up to 15,056 for roosters game.

Over 15000 by Tuesday is good. 3 more work days and Saturday walk up should have a crowd in the mid to high 30000s. Lets hope so. It should be a great game of footy and I feel that alot of neutrals will be keen to see the backs to wall Cowboys continue their run to the GF.
