I took a mate from work to Dragons game on Sunday night. We went sat on the hill.

He spent all day at work saying how expensive drinks, ground entry, food, beer.

I thought to myself later on maybe it's just to expensive. He said he spent about $160 dollars on just himself..

As opposed to $50 a month for his Foxtel and a carton of beer..

The bloke is a bit of a tight arse with money, but people just won't spend the money to go to a game. Rather watch on Foxtel, the tv experience is to good for them to be bothered getting off the lounge and going to the game.

So it all sounds like Sydney is just a shit place to have elite professional RL clubs. It's too wet, it's too hot, it's too cold, it's too expensive, it's too much hassle, it's too far, it takes too long to get there, it takes too long to get home, the traffic is shit, the public transport is shit, there's no parking, the grounds are too big, the grounds are too old, there's other stuff to do.

I guess our "national" competition shouldn't have more than half its clubs and half its games there. Seems like the only solution. But what's the response when rationalisation or even expansion to other areas is raised?

I agree, I'm from Sydney and I think most supporters just can't be bothered attending games anymore.

I go to as many games as possible and it feels like I'm swimming against the tide.

There is definitely two types of supporters in Sydney Tv and spectators.

75 percent are Tv supporters.. I'm in a tipping contest at work with 43 other workers and just chatting to the other people in the tipping contest only a few will actually go and attend a game the rest just watch on tv or catch the score on the internet.

It's disappointing but people can't be bothered making an effort anymore, they just relax at home do the lawns wash the car, turn the tv on and go to bed.

For them it's cheaper they have more time on their hands to do household chores.

I don't disagree with you comments but exactly where do you think all the money is coming from?

Flinders station to mcg/aami is about a 20min walk, all be it a nice one along the river and usually takes me about 2hours via south bank :)

Train to Jolimont or Richmond and its about 5mins tops to AAMI, 2mins to the G.

Because all the suburban train lines run to Flinders/Spencer St, Melbourne does have better access to their centrally located sports precinct.

You can literally drink in a pub til 20mins before kick off and get to a Storm game easily.

When more than 1 of the non-Sydney teams actually do any better you might almost have a point on rationalisation.

Pretty much
However it's been like that for a very long time.
Now with all the live telecasting of games there is even less incentive to go to a game.
I go to all Sharks home games that I can.
If I can't make it I lend my ticket to someone else.

But inventing teams with shit Stolen mascot names and sticking them in non rugby league places won't fix it either.

The NRL could at least try setting games at decent times and making an effort with marketing and pricing, and if it's still shithouse then maybe more drastic steps need to be taken.

But while they continue making things difficult in an already difficult market then there's no point really having the discussion.

If there were more non-Sydney teams, they would. That's the point. And of course there's already more than one with better crowds than the worst Sydney clubs' crowds. And it's only the worst clubs that are relevant.

The worst Sydney clubs change year on year. Every non-Sydney club bar Broncos is firmly middle of the pack. What makes you or anyone else think a brand new team would break out of that 12-16k level?
The last new team (in glorious RL heartland SE QLD) in fact has just about the worst crowds in the comp.

Exactly. Brisbane smashes the Sydney teams. So there's one answer right there.

I have my doubts as well. NRL and its clubs are just very bad at this and not sure any club anywhere is going to be a raging success overnight. NRL has been very very poor at building its profile and doing the hard yards and costly investment in building itself up and making people want to follow the sport. In Perth aside from the games clubs bring and the international last year the NRL is doing virtually nothing to build the games profile here so if you dropped a club in now then we would get an initial interest of probably 16-18k crowds but that would probably drop away to a standard 14-15k I would suggest.

I guess the bigger population and scarcity of product hopefully means over time you can develop a bigger fanbase ie Storm as an example. But if you keep losing, the club is run by shonky management and the players act like gangsters then crowds will fall regardless of cost or location or facility.

And so they should 2million people. They should be filling Suncorp.Only rl team in town.

Not as simple as just pop size, Auckland has 1.4million people one team and 14k crowds. The fact broncos aren't avg 40kmagain is just a reflection of how bad our game is at growing itself.

You do realise there's only one competition in the Southern Hemisphere with only a few teams that average 40k crowd average.

What we have trouble with is getting the floating sports fan, the one who goes because it's an event, these fans are the one's we lost because of the super league war and the media campaign to create the perception that rugby league culture is negative.
These supporters are the one's we gained during the Tina Turner years and now seem to have gone to AFL.
