bit like off topic, but Newtown are playing the better warriors team at Henson this Saturday for their beer, footy and food festival. There's plenty of buzz around it, I'm looking forward to getting out there. Be interesting to see what the crowd is like.

I think it's fta tv that will lose a lot o their control & influence to dictate to sports , the medium itself is dying as people move to other platforms for their entertainment, revenue will decrease & so this will be the last of the big buck deals most sports will receive because stations won't be able to afford it. So the NRL essentially do what they want within contract guidlines with few consequences for the next deal , they know the big fta money won't be there anyway in 2022

I agree FTA is a little on the nose with audiences, hence why many sports are investing heavily into other digital platforms to distribute their product or using multiple networks to present the game. I sense that will evolve quickly towards the end of the current deal.

Circling back to crowds, even with a greater control of the scheduling, is there any confidence that the powers that be would place a greater emphasis on boosting game day attendance? Or would they still be hamstrung by what the dollar impact is in digital media revenues? Boosting crowd attendance is a fairly positive way of getting money back into clubs without the need for such a reliance on growing the share of the central pool of fund from HQ.

A simplistic calc shows that for a 5,000 average attendance increase (and getting to the desired 20k average) at $30 a head across a whole season, you are looking at $30m+ in game day revenue hitting clubs pockets. At $2m per team, I'm sure that would make many teams more self sustainable than they are, which is a desire the NRL has eluded to. The focus currently is too narrow from HQ towards TV money as the most important source of revenue generation.

Its always a good day at Henson Park and they did beer, footy and food festival last year and it was a success, would love to go this, I just depends on weather I can finish work early.

I'm pretty stoked it's all lined up for me, when they're playing the warriors, 10 minute walk from my dwelling and when I'm free from work/footy commitments. Pretty damm excited.

It will be interesting to see the type of 'control' exerted by NRL management on the draw next year.

They need to show a bit of fortitude and demonstrate that the strength of the competition especially in NSW and QLD should mean they have more influence than currently being exerted. If NRL HQ can ensure better scheduling, it will no doubt create more interest via crowd numbers and TV engagement from both a ratings and sponsorship level. If the game itself is more attractive via a reasonable mix of prime time viewing and crowd attendance attraction, then that should translate to consistent growth in stakeholder interest from the punter standing on the hill to the white collars handing over millions in sponsorship and TV deals.

Pandering to one of these excessively has shown to be to negatively impact others. The balance is currently not right but the opportunity is there to make a positive change. How the draw will be presented will give a good indication on the level of control the heads of the NRL really have.

Nine will be the winner with Friday and Sunday games, after all they have the best time slots for crowds which is where the NRL will put the best games you'd hope. Fox's exclusive Super Saturday will take a hit as they will get the second tier games then the third tier will end up on Friday 6pm and Thursdays nights. You'd think the lowest drawing clubs will end up with these slots more regularly so expect a stink from them. I wouldn't expect to see Melbourne move from predominantly Saturdays to appease Fox.

Hopefully NRL are already working on it and have identified the biggest drawing fixtures that simply must be in the best time slots then work from there.

You may be right, though the danger is you marginalise the awareness and marketing of the sport by taking it away from mainstream audiences. Take a look at Union or soccer or RL in UK for what consigning yourself to a pay tv or digital subscription service can do for popularity.
It will be interesting to see what FTA does to counteract the digital revolution, will they be like the taxi industry and pretend it wont happen until its too late, or will they be like Fox who are already getting their digital footprint in place to counteract the online services becoming available. It is unlikely by 2021, which is when the next tv deal will likely be signed, that there will have been a mass migration away from FTA though on demand digital will likely be a significant player by then.

Spending as much as the NRL intends in the next few years you would expect at the very least that they will have their own advanced subscription service, though if this will include production or just simulcast is yet to be seen. If the numbers stacked up they could do 2 games FTA and the rest on demand but not sure NRL is popular enough to survive just on its own streaming service yet or if enough people will get their sports entertainment in this way by 2022?
