Ps I think the afl model is a good idea, no point throwing hundreds of millions growing the game if the team stinks, western force perfect example of how you can allow potential success turn to failure if you don't support new areas/clubs.

The suburban Sydney ground thing seems a relatively recent tradition to me.

Up until the early eighties a weekend of Sydney footy would see very small (sub-7000) crowds at suburban venues with a whopping 30-40k attending the match of the round at the SCG. This is what I read from the crowd websites anyway.

This was no different to Brisbane club footy might I add. The Lang Park match of the round would always attract higher crowds than the suburban games.

Sydney has a history of going to a centrally located, neutral stadium for a big game each week.

How do you expalin the drop off in crowds from 2013-2015? We only had one of eight sht schedule games. Yet crowds dropped. Short of playing 7 games on a Sunday afternoon at 3pm, which will never happen there will always be times that are less convenient. This goes much deeper than Ko times, though they are clearly a factor,

You mean the period of double Friday nights and Monday night footy, plus the emergence of Thursday night footy?

Neutral ground between 2 Sydney areas to bring fans from both clubs (rather than locking it away in each clubs own suburb and telling to opposition fans to f*ck off and watch it on tv) will see a huge boost in attendance.

Each club can have their own suburban grounds for training and maybe even for out of town opponents. But this idea that clubs would rather have shitty crowds that lose their home ground advantage is f*cking childish...

I would say it's the obsession with needing to beat AFLs outlier crowd figures by copying their soulless policies that is childish.

I'd much rather we focus on getting suburban grounds upgraded to simply have good coverage for 20,000 people in wet weather situations than force everybody to play out of a half full SFS or quarter full ANZ.

The $2 billion they aren't spending now on stadiums could have done that easily

Actually, Sydneys oldest RL tradition is a centralised grounds policy....

1908 had all 8 sydney teams playing between Birchgrove, Moore Park and Wentworth. It was more than a decade later when we even had half of the competition playing away from these central grounds.

And, yes, as you say. Match of the round and that centralised approach existed up until SL as far as i can tell...

Answer the question. Did the nrl treat storm differently by giving them more than $4mill a year more than other clubs for years and did this give them an advatage? Yes or No?

The highest attended games in Sydney each season are always during the day. Historically sunday afternoon is the prime slot for consistently good attendances.

Last I checked their crowds got a boost when they started playing well, but now a couple mediocre seasons in a row and they now have the lowest attendances in the league

I really hope (and my suspision is that he has it in mind) that Greeny creates a minimum standard for NRL stadiums that naturally excludes places like Liechhardt and Brooky...

Either the clubs can get the necesary funding (local councils will know that not funding the grounds will mean losing the teams) or they can take their games over to decent stadiums in decent locations.

Doesnt need to be ANZ/SFS, but there are middle options between the huge stadiums and the shitty suburban dumps...

Went to my first big bash last year. $30 to get in so not that cheap, started at 4pm on a Thursday, so not exactly convenient time, I really don't like cricket that much so not exactly a rusted on fan, was at the waca which makes shark park look like Wembley. Guess what, it was sold out! They must be doing something right. It was a great "event" and a good night out. I'll def be back to another one this year.

This isn't the first time you have posted this story and each time you get told why the big bash draws big attendances but I'll tell you again.

The competition is played in the summer school break meaning kids are obviously off school as well as a good portion of parents off work and a good portion of society in general over the slow January period. Even for people who are working, it is normally no issue leaving work early in January. This means that the games can be played at any time.

Sydney and Melbourne have 2 teams and the other capital cities have one team. Each club only has to sell 4 home games (5 or 6 if they host finals which sell themselves). Given those numbers, if the average cricket fan goes to one BBL game in their home city each season you will still get sell outs at most grounds for each game.
