Far North rugby league fans are in for a treat in December with the majority of the Auckland Warriors NRL squad coming for pre-season training.

Speaking exclusively to the Northland Age, Warriors' General Manager Jim Doyle said almost the entire NRL first team squad - minus those competing the in the Four Nations competition in England - would head to the Far North between December 6-8.

Mr Doyle said the Warriors' organisation was aware that the Far North, and particularly Kaitaia, has had a number of problems in the past few years.

"We know it's a community that doesn't get a great deal of support from professional sports teams. We know places like Kaitaia have had a pretty rough year or so we thought we'd head up to give something back to the community up there," he said.

Mr Doyle said like many other teams the Warriors' scouts regularly checked out league and rugby talent in the Far North, with the district providing a number of great NRL players over the years, including Craig Smith, Elijah Taylor, Adam Blair and James Fisher-Harris.

But the trip in December was more about pre-season training and putting something back into the community by giving Far North league fans a chance to see some of their heroes prepare for a gruelling NRL season.

Mr Doyle said the itinerary for the far North trip was still being worked out, but he had received great support for the trip from a number of Far North groups to help make it happen.

"It will be the whole first team squad, minus those who played in the six nations (including Shaun Johnson, Issac Luke, David Fusitu'a and Solomone Kata). (Former captain and club great) Simon Mannering will be there though."

He said star fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck - who was injured after just six games this NRL season, would make the trip and a decision was yet to be made if Kieran Foran would make the trip.

Mr Doyle said with the talent available at the club for next season he predicted it would be an exciting time for Warriors' fans.

Meanwhile, Warriors' coach Stephen Kearney says the player's attitudes and mental application needs to improve for the NRL club to begin consistently performing at a high level after years of underachieving.

Just weeks into the role as new head coach and a fortnight into preseason training, Kearney says it is clear that changes are needed in the wake of them missing the NRL playoffs for a fifth straight year.

The former Kiwis World Cup winning coach is looking to instill and grow a club culture that enables players and the team to perform at their peak each week with a focus on improving their mindset and mental strength.

"It's pretty obvious that there needs to be change and sometimes that change is pretty challenging for some," Kearney told Newstalk ZB"s Tony Veitch.

"But what I do know is there needs to be change and that change for the most part is from an attitude perspective.

Land of the Long White Cloud documentary, some good insights into how life is in Kaitaia and the far north. Plus some fishing!

I reckon NZ would be the Greatest Place on Earth...

...except it lacks hot chicks..

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/league...andrew-mcfadden-to-fix-warriors-leaky-defence

"Warriors coach Stephen Kearney has paired himself up with the man he replaced, Andrew McFadden, to fix arguably the club's biggest problem area: defence"

"Kearney also has Warriors legend Stacey Jones and former England boss Steve McNamara on his coaching staff, who have been tasked with shaping the attack"

"The signs look good for Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and his comeback from an ACL tear, though.

The Kiwis fullback was moving freely training, taking part in most of the drills, and appears well on track to be ready for the start of the season"

So the guy we turned around the Kiwis defence is trying to do the same with the Warriors.
And we'll get to see how Stacey Jones goes working with the halves and the spine.

I do this to myself every goddamn year, but dammit I can't help but feel a little bit optimistic.

Making all the right noises that's for sure, I do have faith in Hoffman's word however as he seemed to be painfully aware of the issues in the club.

All aboard the hype train... again

"places like Kaitaia have had a tough year"

yeah, I don't know what he's referring to specifically. Perhaps places like Kaikoura or Havelock North have had tougher years.

Some pre season photos. Only posting the link because I took note of photo no. 10. It's of Wiki with who I assume is Tof Sipley. I know Wiki was never the tallest guy around, but damn Sipley looks like a big unit.

Also there is some talk in the 'other forum' about a guy training with the squad called Jordan Pinnock. He's come from Newcastle and St George lower Grades and looks like a solid Prop / Second Rower. Originally from the West Coast? Looks like he runs hard and tackles harder.

And then there's the Hone factor....

Yep, we deserve a cheer up..

The Vodafone Warriors are hitting the Far North in force for a three-day community visit to Kaitaia next week.

The squad flies north in two separate groups, one travelling on a DC3 charter to Kaitaia Airport while the rest of the players and staff will fly to Kerikeri before transferring by bus to Kaitaia.

“The Kaitaia community has had a lot of challenges recently and we want to do what we can to help to lift spirits,” said Vodafone Warriors community relations manager Petrece Kesha.

“We’re focused on engaging with the people in the area and showing the kids there what they are capable of achieving.”

Doubling as a training camp, the visit starts with an official welcome at Waimanoni Marae on Tuesday afternoon where the party will be staying.

After a hangi with local community leaders on Tuesday evening, the Vodafone Warriors will be the feature attraction at a sports day at Arnold Rae Park on Wednesday. Also involved in the event are the Moko Foundation, New Zealand Police, New Zealand Defence Force and Kaitaia Volunteer Fire Brigade.

The Vodafone Warriors will give some of the Moko Foundation’s special needs children a flight on the DC3 while they’ll also put a group of local under-17 rugby league players through a training session after the sports day event finishes.

The Vodafone Warriors will attend a function run by the Tai Tokerau Rugby League on Wednesday evening.

Thursday begins with an open training session at Arnold Rae Park at 8.00am followed by a signing session and a lunch attended by 50 children selected by their schools.

On Thursday afternoon, players will be joined by their lunch guests for a community project, tasked with doing up the Kaitaia Nomads’ clubrooms which have fallen into disrepair. The players and their assistants will be involved in cleaning out and painting the clubrooms, mowing the lawn and digging drains.
