2018 Crowd Watch

I wonder how the NRL final tickets get allocated? Obviously the huge amount of MCG/MCC members boosts AFL's final crowds, though allocation to fans of participating clubs never meets demand which is something we dont worry abut unless it was two big Sydney clubs. They also allocate a significant amount to corporate supporters and fan package companies.

It'd be very disappointing if we dont reach 80k given ticket prices, even given the two clubs involved and there lack of support in Sydney. Maybe locking Sydney in for guaranteed 20 years of GF's wasnt the smartest move?

Not quite true.

AFL has operated a ballot system for a long time (at least 10+ years). As I understand this year was one of the lowest rates of people missing out because so few registered - nobody expected Collingwood to make the Grand Final and obviously West Coast aren't bringing a huge number of fans.

For the NRL it largely depends on who's in contention when tickets get released mid-year, then who's actually in it as to how fast it sells. When it's two big clubs (e.g. Dogs-Souffs 2014) it sells out quickly, when it's two less popular clubs or out-of-towners, it struggles out of the blocks but eventually it gets over the line.

I'd be surprised if we had less than 80k.
Not quite right. Regular AFL club members cannot get a ticket, so there is no point is registering for the ballot. You much be a priority 1 or 2 member which costs $300+ per year.

Back to NRL, as a Storm member I just got a text saying tickets still available. I bought tickets last year at the last minute but there seems to be heaps more available same time this year. Last year it seemed the crowd in the cheap seats where I sat was full of pro Cowboys neutrals. There were plenty of spare seats, so we were able to move from the back to the front of the top level at half time. Whilst it would be be bad PR to discount tickets to fill ANZ, it will be much worse PR if the crowd is down on last year. Make this the people's GF and create some buzz by offering all tickets left at $50.

This isn't correct sorry.
It changes year to year depending on Grand Final combatants and how many people register for the ballot.

This year (and it's easy to check on the ticketek site), the majority of club members who registered actually got tickets this year, Priority 1, 2 and even 3. The unsuccessful list of members this season was tiny compared to usual.

You're right that the higher priority memberships that qualify for the upper levels of the ballot are more expensive memberships but they're not that much more costly than regular memberships, generally only 50-100 bucks more than your average full-season one.

I'd love the NRL to actually come out with some kind of projection now we're a couple of days out.

How can this be any good for future tix sales? Folks will hold off until the end to buy tix because they anticipate they'll be cheaper.

The ticketek strategy of releasing tix in waves rather than having them all available stunts sales too. How long is the NRL's contract with Ticketek? Or is it a venue agreement? They should jump to Ticketmaster ASAP

I believe it's venue specific. Ticketing was done by Ticketmaster for the Perth double header and I know Etihad/Marvel Stadium is also Ticketmaster.

Ticketing is usually venue arranged, rarely by promoter as I understand.

Most NRL venues use ticketek apart from Newcastle, Brookvale and Wollongong from memory

Folks of competing clubs won't hold if they think it is going to sell out. Last year didn't sell out. They need to make sure this year does. You are clearly hoping to get neutrals to the game at this stage.

Gonna have their work cut out for them getting neutrals to the game.

Should be just about full despite what the pessimistic say.

And what you'll see is a decent spectacle, unlike the pessimists game.
