2018 Squad - Top 4?

The pain of last Sunday is beginning to fade away and the signing of Graham made a lot things better. Although, I've been thinking about our squad next year and it's a cracker. I honestly believe we are a top 4 team next year! Well definitely top 8. The bench kinda tricks me but this is how we could go:

  1. Matt Dufty
  2. Nene McDonald
  3. Euan Aitken
  4. Tim Lafai
  5. Jason Nightingale
  6. Gareth Widdop
  7. Ben Hunt
  8. Graham
  9. Cameron McInnes
  10. Paul Vaughn
  11. Tyson Frizell
  12. Joel Thompson
  13. De Belin
  14. Ah Mau
  15. Sims
  16. Sele/Lawrie/Host
  17. Mann/Field
A lot of people believe Mann should be in our starting squad, but I don't know where. I don't think he would go wing because of McDonald & Nightingale. The club re-signed Nightingale, so he must be playing his last year as a winger. McDonald will stay at wing too.

Centre?

Lafai has a great offload and has some serious potential.
Atken has brutal strength and has serious potential.
Number 16: I don't mind who plays out of those 3 listed.
Number 17: Where do you put Mann? Take out an outside back for Mann? Why would we re-sign/sign Lafai, Nightingale and McDonald, if the team was wishing to play Mann in the starting squad. Jai Field would make an amazing super-sub. Did you see what he did on the weekend?

100% content with 1-15

Also, our forwards are amazing and Hunt & Widdop are exceptional.

What do you think?
Seriously?
Our back line (outside of Hunt) with Nene, Nighty.... and even our centres is stuffed.
Zero speed and zero excitement.

Have you not seen the Storms and others outside backs?

Its called SPEED and SIZE.
We wont finish in the top 8.

Other than a mini early season run, we were dead set last in 2017.

Hunt and Graham will give the team what they lack, being self belief. They may even be able to teach McGregor how to coach.

If Field bulked upped and maintained his speed could he turn into one of the wingers we desperately need?

Your absolutely right! And if the coach had any idea, Macdonald would start the season in reserve grade and only be promoted if he showed a bit more promise. In reserve grade in 2018, Lomax to start at fullback, Field to five-eighth, This will set the Dragons up for a very strong season. The first grade side needs to be picked purely on form. Have a bad game and you have the chance of being replaced by a reserve grade player who had a great game.

I hope we can get our final squad sorted nice and early so that we can crack on and build those combinations at the start of November. Minimising disruptions by not having players coming in later in the year or early next year would be preferable.
So glad the club decided to promote Zac Lomax, he will debut next year mark my words.

The problem with that is that a lot of players in world cup will not come back to training untill Christmas or later.
So only a short time to work on new combinations.
But it will be interesting

Yes it will Dragonssamy
When you consider who wont be returning to train until the new year its going to need a smart coach to get dhe up in such a short time.
Lets take a look at who will be missing:

F/B = -
Wing = Nene/Nighty
Centres = Lafai/Aitken
5/8 = Widdop
Half = Hunt
FR = Graham/Vaughan
2nd = Friz
Lock = -
Hooker = -

Bench
Sims, Sele, Lam

So basically 12 of our (probable) starting 17 wont be back to training until the new year

I don't think we will finish top 4. Storm, Cowboys, Easts, Sharpies and Brisbane will be in the eight. They all have good coaches and speed all over the park.
We don't have a decent coach and unless McIdiot brings in players with some speed we are behind the eight ball.
The right coach would make a difference

Other than the team's much maligned wingers and centres, I am really concerned about the fullback and hooker positions.

If a good coach was in charge, I have no hesitation in saying we would be top 4 with the catle we have in our squad.
  1. Dufty will be OK and improve during the off season.
  2. Aitken has a question mark over him however, Lomax is waiting for his chance to take the right centre position.
  3. Mann will do well on the left wing
  4. Nightingale, Macdonald and one of our young guns will fight it out for the right wing.
  5. Halves are great
  6. Forwards are great
  7. Bench are fine.
