2018 world cup bid would help league

It would sky rocket sports funding, and cities would no doubt get improvements to the various lesser stadia.

The germany world cup used 13 or 14 stadiums.

We have:

SFS, Homebush, teltra, suncorp, teltra dome, are the only suitable ones off the bat. Telstra dome may be suspect though unless its rectangle configuration counts.

Newcastle would need an upgrade to all seats, so there is one more.

Perth would need a massive upgrade to an existing or new stadium as their new ground is an oval.

There won't be enough stadia around the place to do it, so one could expect exceptional upgrades to stadiums like parramatta, penrith, newcastle.

Anyway, does anyone know any plans the bidders may have in store?

And what stadium in sydney should be upgraded (within reason, forget places like leichart and brookvale they have no chance at this early stage but who knows) and where could a new stadium if they built one, go?

EDIT: From the age.com.au...."For the last World Cup in Germany, FIFA required stadiums with a minimum capacity of 40,000 spectators, with the big matches played before at least 60,000. Melbourne and Sydney could offer two stadiums each and Perth and Adelaide at least one. Or a joint bid with New Zealand could be considered. There are drawbacks: our biggest grounds are oval — the wrong shape for soccer. But we should not let that spoil our pitch. Carn the Socceroos."

I am certain FIFA would hate ovals.

Apparently only one city is allowed to have two stadiums, and all the rest have 1. Based on this, there will be no upgrades to stadiums in Sydney at all.

Newcastle and Perth both have upgrades in process that will bring them to FIFA standards well before 2018.

One would think that it would be a tussle between sydney and Melbourne for the city with 2 stadia.

But how would the bid work out? Who would win that right?

And if not melbourne, in that their oval stadia counted against them (lets face it, no world cup in a LONGG time has had an oval stadium as the main stadium) would that mean a new rectangular stadium in melbourne?

Or would they just use the G?

Not since as far back as 2006!!!

Me thinks they would use the G. But it would not get them the final.

I think if we could use the G then we would be a good shot at the Final. However the G doesn't meet regulations and Telstra dome does*, so unless we get an exemption I would think it will be 2 in Sydney and Telstra Dome in Melbourne.

*The regulation has to do with the % of seats within a specified distance of the pitch, not whether the pitch is oval or otherwise (although oval does make it harder to meet).

but the german 'olympic' stadium is not as big an oval as the mcg....the g's is practically mammoth in comparison.

the easy credit stadium has a track around it, but its capacity is only 40k

ok, so a couple of ovals were used, so this would mean that melbourne would not get the final one would think.

Seats had to be removed from the G at the ends to fit in the running track for the Commonwealth Games (altho it is wide). The 100,000 capacity is what holds back the MCG as this extra capacity, added to the top of the stands, is why the G falls down on the criteria (see explanation in above post).

Then we wouldn't be able to get the bid coz I doubt we'd have enough large cities around the countries to support a 40000 seaters.

Sydney 2
Melbourne 2
Brisbane 1, maybe 2?
Perth 1
Adelaide 1
Newcastle 1

Which only makes 8 or 9 stadiums.

Regardless, if we did get the bid, even if Sydney could only have two stadiums, you can expect huge upgrades on transport links, seating etc for Homebush and the SFS which can only be a great thing for rugby league.

this is the problem with an Australian bid, the concentration of the population in a small number of urban areas.

To your list will probably be added
Gold Coast
Maybe Geelong
Maybe Hobart
Maybe Wollongong
Maybe Townsville

Then you would be looking at a bid with enough stadiums. As you can see the above list is getting expensive so its likely that not a lot would be spent on what is already in place.

Great for League and Football in the areas listed above, probably not a lot to be gained in the areas with current approved stadiums.

Add to that Townsville and Gold Coast with upgrades, maybe Wollongong also. That is 11-12 cities, thats more than enough.

a world cup bid will only help rugby league signicantly in Adelaide IMO.

gold coast and townsville may be improved ( big maybe for townsville IMO) , but it wont make a major change.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's FIFA policy that there can not be more than two stadiums per city, each with a minimum of 40k seats.

Some of the possibilities are;

ANZ & SFS in Sydney
MCG & Telstra Dome in Melbourne but IMO they would need a new dedicated rectangular one built.
Suncorp Stadium & Renovated QE II? = Brissie
Renovated Dairy in NQLD?
Energy Aus in Newcastle. Will it hold 40k and fit FIFA standards when renos completed? I doubt it.

If the afore mentioned policy is correct, that means building world class rectangular stadia in Perth and Adelaide and maybe some new ones along the east coast. I can see one and one only, in Adelaide and Peth. In the case of the former, it would end up being a white elephant post cup.

See below for past and future examples of what the FIFA would expect. It would be great to host it and there's no doubt Australia could do it but who will fund it? FIFA are not in a rush to come here anyway and there are other nations more deserving. To be blunt, we are a new pimple on the arse of FIFA.

there is no need for any transport upgrades for Homebush , everything is already in place.

The SFS ( or more park) will need a train station , but there is already a proposal in place for one ( although very tentative) Either way i cant see it being completed by 2018.

Just saw that it's two stadiums in one city. Plenty of cities in the country but can't see 40k stadiums in many of them. There you go then, we're farked.

there is no reason a multi purpose stadium such as ANZ or the new perth stadium couldnt be built in Adelaide too.

we already have more than half the stadiums required.

Suncorp
SFS
ANZ
EAS (upgrade coming)
Perth (coming)
Telstra dome

Canberra ( easy upgrade)
Gold coast ( easy upgrade)
