Haha! Nope. I love that you know what a Smoggy is!
I have supported Newcastle United since I was about 10 years old, watching Brian Moore on Match of the Day on the ABC at 10 pm every Monday night during the 70's. I'm not a Geordie either.
Born and bred Aussie.
Oh marra, that’s even worse!!!

I’m a Cumbrian mackem

For the record, Woman's football world cup final is currently on.
Massive sold out crowd. Unbelievable noise. Besides the State of Origin which is basically only truly interesting in 1 country, we have so far to go to even match this sort of sporting atmosphere

We are second only to the AFL in this country. RL will never be able to compete with overseas sports like soccer, NFL basketball etc. Crowds are up. Origin and grand final atmosphere is second to none. Definitely not frightening.

Wow, so now rain on the day before a game is now a legit excuse. We have to stop making excuses and just admit the truth.
Seriously Sydneysiders, we have to admit that we have a really shit attendance culture for sport.
No more excuses. Most would just prefer to sit on our lazy arses and watch on tv. I'm one of them and am not afraid to admit it. When I was younger, I couldn't get enough of a live game day experience, but I don't feel that drawcard anymore. There's a multitude of reasons why, all of which have been mentioned here already.
And simply, we just have to admit we don't have the attendance culture of the ALF, and that culture is weird in itself, due to the fact that ALF and Victorians and other southern states think that their sport is the best and they continually believe that it will take over the world. It's an enclosed obsession of a very small part of the planet, yet it keeps them all happy enough that they think they are relevant in the grand scheme of things.
Good luck to them but honestly, they have reached their peak. We haven't, but I doubt we ever will.

Again I ask do you have kids?

After being given options for out Sunday trip out. Chose the movies because it was cold and wet.

I am sure many other familes have that same discussion when it is stinking hot or weather is like that.

AFL have some terrible crowds this season compared to normal. BBL had a drop off. A League too. So not like a RL only problem

Pretty much this. Game day entertainment hasn't improved as much as TV coverage has

People are watching it live on their phones.

How can a footy club compete with that sort convenience?

If there is even half an excuse not to go (but still have the option of watching it live) a lot of people will take the soft option.

...anyway yesterdays crowd was what I expected.
School holidays and an origin decider 3 days later.
school holidays are the most expensive time of the year for families.

Wouldn’t that have been the perfect time for the sharks to have an amazing family deal then and tried to actually get families to the game rather than making it more convenient to watch on your phone?

My Ltd experience of afl here is that it is largely families and older couples who are full members and fill the stadium, it seems we still aim for the twenty somethings, and as you say this generation of twenty year olds are more interested in their phone than real world experiences.

Crowds are up? Using the twisted trickf**kery of the magic round?

BBL has had a little drop off but one big issue they made was increasing the number of games, diluting the product. The season felt like it just dragged on.

AFL average after 16 rounds is at 35.9k, up from 35.1k this time last year. Crowds at the expansion teams are down but overall, tracking for a growth year.

NRL also slightly up year on year, not by much, but still ahead. Just have to arrest this downward trend, granted it's Origin period. Got to get that focus back into the comp so that crowds can pick up again in the second half of the season.

You don’t go to the footy
You have no idea about anything to do with Sydney.
All you do is wait for a shit crowd and then have a crack.
You go quiet when it’s a shit crowd in any other joint though.
You as a punter add virtually zero to rugby league.
Yet you tell everyone on here how they should be doing it.

10k against a team that brings no supporters was what I expected .
I actually couldn’t go ( I gave my tix to some mates though)

It’s school holidays.
People are away
People are having to spend a fortune entertaining their kids for 2 weeks.

A game of footy on a Sunday arvo is not a high priority.
Especially as it’s on f**king free to air TV.

NRL is artifically inflated though with magic round but yeah all have their issues moving forward

This is it. Broncos ave what 12k in Sydney? Throw in other factors and wasn't far off average.

I will likely miss our game this week due to poor timeslot it happens as people in Sydney understand

Will be interesting to see what the Roosters crowd is for our game on the Central Coast this week. In 2017 against the Sharks we got 20k which is close to capacity, however last year against the Titans we got 10k. This game is against the Cowboys, so again a limited amount of away fans, however surely there will be more due to winning the comp last year. I'm predicting 12-15k.
