Well we have the evidence for recent match ups. It was Souths v Bulldogs.
Broncos or Melbourne V any of the Sydney big 4 (Souths,Eels,Dogs, Wests) would probably rate the highest. Melbourne lose around 250k viewers when Storm not in GF and Brisbane around 150k when Broncos not in it.

Main metro ratings for GF
2018 895k Sydney, 551k Melbourne, 488k Brisbane
2019 Sydney 832k, Melbourne 320k, Brisbane 534k,

Brisbane again punching above its weight whilst Sydney slightly down and Melbourne massively down.

Top 5 viewed games all featured Brisbane. If thats not a reason to get expansion happening nothing else is.

Only options are Brisbane2 and Perth to get us a national footprint with varying time zones. This would increase the current tv viewership by 5-10m per year. Tv $$ should easily pay for those teams to join. Next step would be an island based team and nz2

each team gets a $13m grant off the NRL. 2 extra teams/ 1 game would need to bring in an extra $26million to make it break even.

What do we want? Brisbane two.
When do we want it: now.

Actually I would get a Brisbane 2 and 3.

Great results for the NRLW viewing again. I wonder if they should expand the comp and play it over summer? Would it draw a bigger TV deal and more viewers if played Nov-Feb with games on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening? Production costs would go up for Fox but if it is puling more viewers than S15 and Aleague is that an issue?

I would have a women's test match, rather than the NRLWGF, as the pre grand final match.
The WNRL grand final should be a stand alone game.

GF day is about clubs, not internationals. I do agree the NRLW GF should be stand alone game, perhaps on the Saturday

QUOTE FROM NINE’S DIRECTOR OF SPORT, TOM MALONE

“As viewers move from linear to digital, and consume in long form, short form, big screen and small screen, Wide World of Sports has adapted our coverage of rugby league to reach viewers anywhere, anytime on any device. These results are a great vindication of our strategy to hold exclusive rights where we can, and hold all rights for all platforms. Of course the players deserve the most credit – they’ve put on another amazing year of thrilling athleticism and feats of great strength and courage – once again proving that rugby league is the greatest game of all.”

QUOTE FROM NINE’S DIRECTOR OF SALES - SPORT, MATTHEW GRANGER

“It has been a stunning year for rugby league on Nine with a record revenue result across the season and State of Origin, once again hitting a high note for advertisers as Australia’s top rating programme in 2019. Our partners and sponsors have enjoyed great success off the back of their campaigns both on air and online via 9NOW, and we’re already engaging them around what promises to be a huge 2020.”

TV ratings can't be taken in isolation as evidence that viewership is down. I watched on 9now as many others would have.

Adding a Perth team should increase the Perth week-to-week viewership as well as for the big matches as WA viewers will actually have an investment in the comp - just as happened to Melbourne ratings since the Storm have been involved. Boosting a major capital city's ratings is huge for the NRL when it comes to the ratings war.

Reduce the grant down to $11mill.

I'm for reducing the grant, but it must be done on a gradual yearly basis till 2023.Else the impact on individual clubs would be too great if they were whacked with a big reduction early on. $11m grant ATM is too drastic, especially for the smaller clubs.
Next year 2020 leave as is,as time line too close.
2021 reduce by $250k per club= $4m for 16 clubs
2022 reduce by $350k per club= $5.6m
2023 reduce by $500k per club= $8m
So in the first year of the new Tv deal ,the code has totally $17.6m held back.Which would cover 1 new club at the new reduced grant of $12.5m plus have another $5.1m on hand toward the 18th club's ($12.5m grant). That could surely be made up with other revenue sources.IMO a drop of $500k pa is manageable by the clubs, even though it would be curly for some.

All very possible considering it’s only 26m in the scheme of things the game is $500m a year business so to add 2 new teams in areas which should do well is pretty much a no brainer and the viewership will go up at least 5%

FTA not that great but good fox numbers. Overall a pass and shows there is interest in Australians watching the Kangaroos, take note Todd! A decent end of season fixture list for kangaroos would be equivalent of adding an extra round of tv audience to nrl.
