What happened to Masima? How bad was the injury ?

Hills pulled off an upset with a very impressive performance, with Lestrange dominating the ruck and the Bulls players producing offload after offload. Hills have lost 7 games by 8 points or less this season, but they showed today that they are hard to stop on that rare occasion that they put it all together.

This game went try for try even after Hills lost playmaker Masima, back after a stint in 1st grade rugby union, to a serious injury in the first half. The Bulls have recovered quickly from their 94-4 flogging by Moorebank a few weeks ago.

What happened to Masima? How bad was the injury ?

He put in a chip and chase and attempted to smash the asquith guy and did not get up. Leg injury, in obvious severe pain, taken by the ambulance some time later.

Asquith had 20 players unavailable across both grades, they were hit massively by the flu mid week and had four players pull out 24 hours before the game

In saying that Hills were outstanding today. With their roster they should be a top four side. Wouldn't want to play them 1st week of the finals

The other two they lost to two desperate teams playing for their season. Hardly a crisis. One more win and Asquith are guaranteed a top four spot. A massive effort from a small club. They just need to play better and hopefully get some troops back.

Cabra looked like they would continue their recent good run when they scooted from the blocks to lead 22-0 after 20 minutes but folded against the pressure of playing against a desperate team with their season on the line allowed 6 unanswered tries with John Tohi collecting 4.

Blacktown and Hills both have 1 game left - Blacktown vs St Marys and Hills vs Wests.

Another top 30 squad player appeared in RMC yesterday when Bernard Lewis from the Roosters played fullback for Asquith.

You can never write off East Campbelltown but the momentum is building for Ryde Eastwood and Moorebank. Cabra will be minor premiers but without any of the RMC/NSW Cup players that appeared in their team in the first 15 rounds, they are likely to be flogged by Ryde Eastwood on the first week of the finals and then may face Moorebank for similar treatment in the second week.

While Belrose were never in the game, former NZ Warriors, Newtown, Cabra and Blacktown Workers hooker, Tiger (Mataika) Vatuvei provided a lot creativity with his kicking or with ball in hand.

Masima suffered a badly dislocated kneecap in the same leg he broke some weeks ago - apparently Saturday was his first game back from that broken leg.
I was told by the ground manager on Saturday that the kneecap was around almost to the side of the leg - horrific stuff and he was in a lot of pain.
Apparently the kneecap was put back into place by the paramedics during the 40 minutes the ambulance was on the ground behind the dead ball line for nearly the entire 2nd half - before Masima went to hospital.
Haven't heard anything since - let's hope for a full recovery in time for the 2020 season.

So much for "all NSWRL Grand Finals will be played at Bankwest Stadium for the next 5 years" that D.Trodden announced at the season launch in March.

I would be bitterly diappointed if I was a Shield or Massey Cup player to now know that the NSWRL have gone back on this for these comps and are playing at Leichhardt.

But Channel 9 wanted Canterbury Cup at 3pm on the Sunday so that they could cut it off at 5 for an NRL GF talkfest preview.

Let's hope that the Canterbury Cup GF goes into Golden Point to throw their schedule out.......

In fact here is what Bankwest Stadium's own Press Release said on March 7 this year:

"A new era for New South Wales rugby league begins today . . . and another great event is added to the Bankwest Stadium calendar.

NSWRL’s premier competition is set for its most exciting season yet after unveiling footy apparel giant Canterbury as the new naming rights partner for the Canterbury Cup NSW and a five-year deal to play the Grand Final of the competition at Bankwest Stadium in Western Sydney.

The deal will see Bankwest Stadium host the Grand Final of the Canterbury Cup NSW and three of its other major competitions – Jersey Flegg, Ron Massey and Sydney Shield."

Until Channel 9 flexes its muscle and demands that the Canterbury Cup GF is played at 3:00pm on the Sunday for TV purposes and the NSWRL could not be bothered to pay for an extra day's hire fee to use Bankwest on the Saturday.

The Cabra/Asquith game was a cracker. 1st half was brutal and anyones game until Cabra broke away with a lucky try off a rebounded kick before scoring another just before halftime. Then it seemed like they had broken Asquiths back with a quick try after halftime to get out to 16 to 2 before Asquith stormed back and at 16all made several line breaks but couldn't get across the line. Cabra then got a try against the run of play to what may have been a forward pass to win but it was a game neither team deserved to lose. Cabras bench looked stronger then Asquiths and they have some momentum into the finals. Asquith are far from a spent force and on that effort will still test the top sides if they can hold 4th. They need their best 6 and 7 back and missed Jerry Key and their fuzzy haired big prop. Some funny moments in the game where Yates tried to get a sub on after a try was scored so he could take a kick at goal and no one noticed until Pat Weisner did and got the kick at goal stopped just before it was taken by that player and plenty of friendly banter between both groups throughout the game.
The Shield game was also very competitive with Cabra having a bit too much quality over 80mins. I can't see either team challenging in the finals unless they get players back from injury as the 17 that ran out for both teams is way below their best.
Talk at the ground was Chris Yates to Camden Rams next season and Frank Pritchard to coach Cabramatta with an announcement to be made this week. A big drop in level for Yates who was expecting to be coaching Cabra in the Canterbury Cup by now but now heads out to Group 6 for a 14 game season.
