To be fair we’ve sucked balls in the CS since 2013.

When did Mary take over?

I'll give 4 examples. In 2017, based on the CS result, did you predict we'd win a fair few in a row and then fade towards the end of the season? In 2019, based on the CS result, did you predict we'd barely get off the ground and not even challenge for a top 8 position. Same coach, same CS result, different seasons.

In 2009, based on the CS result, did you predict we'd end up winning the Minor Premiership and then go out of the finals in straight sets. in 2011, based on the CS result, did you predict we'd start off strongly and then fade horribly to limp into the finals?

All I am saying is that it is just a trial. And it is used as a trial - not as a must win game at all costs. We all know we've got a dud coach and that is why we think we'll do poorly in the season - not off the results of the trials.

OT, all that defending on our line in the first half took it out of our players.

Then the team relaxed against a very good Souths reggies Group and the rest is history.

As usual McGenius didn’t give various fringe players any meaningful game time to get some rhythm in attack and defence.

End result we get smoked in the second half.
Whatever we did ie get tired, defended on our line for too long, relaxed, didn’t give credit where due to playing a good outfit etc etc is all symptomatic of our big L approach to a professional sport.
The behaviour is ingrained and firmly intrenched in our DNA as is the way for some of our supporters to keep finding excuses “oh it’s just a trial” or “it doesn’t mean anything” again big L thinking.
I am sure that Souths wouldn’t be tolerant of the results / performances we have turned in if it was them doing it.
It isn’t just a trial it is the Charity Shield our last hit out before the season proper, our latest chance to get things right, our real chance to start with a winning culture and we piss it all up against the wall and have a muppet justify it and every other misconstrued idea of how well prepared we are etc etc.
In the entire time Mc Fookknuckle has been at the helm everything has been the casual relaxed approach with no end of spin attached to it well it hasn’t worked and our CS results have been overwhelmingly reflective of our season.
As I said the last 3 years or more ignore the result at your own peril if people think a loss is ok then don’t complain when we lose during the year as we are set up for it.

It is only a trial OT but on the other hand spot on with Mc9 attitude. Let’s see what Round 1 brings. it is the attack and kicking game and how clunky we are that always concerns me and makes you wonder what the he’ll do they practice at training and how hard.

For me it’s a lot more than a trial because we have been so poor for so long it’s overwhelmingly a chance to stamp some authority back into our team and brand.
By all means treat it as “just a trial” when you have the form line of a regular top 8 team but that isn’t us is it?
If “it’s just a trial” then best the club change its attitude to advertising maybe something like this
“Calling on all St GI fans to get out to Mudgee where we don’t care if we win or lose but we are happy to take your hard earned $$$ for special merchandise while we aren’t really trying. Great opportunity to get ob the cans with the staff and players and by the way make sure you put your hand in your wallet for Kogarah Hospital because we won’t be giving them a winners check”
Has anybody told Mc Fookknuckle that If you are going to cock crow about the 9’s you can’t then simply wash away / ignore the sins of the CS.

Agree OT.

Ford had a excellent game in the NTL trail and Blacker was strong. Ford should have been a starter in the CS.

Didn't surprise me to see Host start however, I didn't see him till late in the second half. Why?
Laf on the wing was a waist and should have been rested as it was a trial after his head knock. Saab could have been given some extra time.

Thought Wiliame let two tries in in the second half. Billy B did well and should be on the bench for the Tigers game however, Luke got the team going forward when he returned.

Would have loved to see Lomax take it up the guts hard after he kicked it out on the full as a "sorry boys" totally wrong though.

The emphasis on "just a trial" and preparing yourself mentally for winning are miles apart.
We got through the first half, against probably their current best, and lead at half time, mostly through some good defense. Considered that they scored in the 1st minute and didn't cross again for the rest of the half.
Mc85 was desperate to win this, probably knowing it will be his last chance (and something that may keep the wolf from the door), hence leaving players on who shouldnt have been eg: Lafai.
Its going to be a long season OT.

I remember the 1971 gf. So much excitement surrounding that match. Saints v Souths, the great rivalry of the day. It was called the Sydney comp. TV coverage had gone up another gear, player interviews prematch. Big SCG crowd. Great times, apart from the result.

But I think you may have forgotten 1977 and 79. It wasn't all drought.

There was a Sydney blackout of live coverage. You had to get WIN tv to watch it live.

You can make all the metres you like.

If the opposition scores more points than you, they win.

Rugby league isn’t won or lost on metres.

Correct.

Generally lost on missed takles, bad passes and/or dropped balls or dumb penalties I reckon...

Losses are for losers. We are losers. In any game an individual or a team would have the utmost attitude of wanting to win. I don't care if it was only a trial. A game is to be won and everyone involved should have the same attitude to win at all costs to boost confidence for the next match and the next and so on.

Tiger Woods would not have reached stellar heights if he didn't have the attitude of winning under all sorts of pressures, same as Liverpool in wanting to take out the Premier League this year - attitude and motivation very strong, Chris Waller getting Winx up for all those wins in a row. Now it is of course the Roosters who will be trying for win No.3 in a row - they will have the right attitude and motivation I feel sure of this.

There are so many examples, so to say a game is just a trial and capitulating in the second half because of wrong attitude/motivation and oh well we did alright in the first half and they just played stronger, well bloody hell our boys should have been told to play stronger too. Just win and try very hard to win all games not go in half heartedly and give up the ghost. Always keep mistakes to a minimum and do not give away stupid penalties - use your bloody footy brain as it is your full-time job.

McGregor is not the guy to motivate the team - instead of a juicy carrot dangling down at the players to entice them he puts out shit.

Great to see some of our young talent got enough game time to showcase their talent and challenge the incumbents on their positions.
Mary should be criticised on this alone. It still blows my mind he left Lafai on the wing rather than give Saab, Sailor or Gale time.

Did Peirera get injured?

Lafai replaced him on the left wing and played the entire second half against the knights at right centre.

He played the full 160 minutes in the trials.

WTF!

I couldn't work that out either. We should have known better considering Mary's history of using the bench. I guess he already had his team picked for rd 1 and was just gave a few CC players a few minutes for nothing games. There is no competition for spots so the incumbents don't have to do anything sadly.

The side needed Lafai's sensational speed, blistering acceleration, dogged defence, sensational sidestep/swerve, professional passing, whimsical humour, unflagging will to win no more than 28%- 48% of NRL games and night club aura after being the best trainer after being terminally injured. Hang on, Ramsey is twice as potent with no downside!

Giving Lafai all that game time tells me the caoch was trying to give him every opportunity to justify his inevitable round 1 selection...

Balmain’s win in 1969 was considered a huge upset. If Jack Gibson had guided Saints to the 1971 premiership with Changa, Billy Smith and a team of young tradesmen, that would’ve been close to the greatest ever rugby league coaching achievement. It was 11-10 to Souths with not a huge amount of time left on the clock, before their final try.
As a 9 year old, I became a Saints fan after watching that Grand Final.
LIghtweight pack against Souths' elite internationals.
Courageous performance and never say die.
Would have been the upset of the century should we have jagged a win.

I recall we used to get the second half on match day. But now that you mentioned it...

We lived out in the south-western suburbs back then (Green Valley). Memories of my father on the roof moving the antenna around, he was actually an antenna installer for a while so probably knew what we needed.

We kids would all be yelling out the window when the picture was ok. I'm sure it was grainy as crap but we thought it was great.

I was converted the week before when we beat Manly 15-12 in the Final. Smith and Langlands wonderful combination and a unbelievable defensive effort upset the red hot favourites and Minor Premiers Manly. I was hooked!

So the Mc85 train keeps rolling along.
Moving Lafai to the wing, I cant describe the feeling of why?????

Any way some positives:
Jacob Host - best I've seen him play. Has to be in the 17
Billy Brittain - Great pick-up, just lacks fitness atm, but has time to make that up.
Tyson Frizell- happiest I've seen him look for a long time and his game showed it. (hopefully positive for us)
Tyrell Fuimaono - another great pick up. Again I'd have him in my 17
Overall defense in the first half was very good. Fell away in the 2nd.

Negatives:
Of course our dynamic duo of centres.
I don't think young Eddie Blacker is ready for 1st grade any time soon.
Attack was rinse and repeat

No doubt we will see the team rolled out in round 1 with what we had in the first half with the addition of Graham, who drops out?

Great summary, agree 100% .
Just on Eddie Blacker I agree but if he keeps putting the work, in 6 to 12 months or so he will be up to NRL standard in my option.
He like Kerr was a few years ago.
This is his first year aa a full time trainer.
