A well-timed spray, if used sparingly, can help the coach get a response from his players. But the thing is the more you yell the more you get diminished returns. Eventually the players will just tune out.
As a coach, you need to read the room. Sometimes a spray might help if the players are complacent, but looking at those Tigers players with their heads down they know exactly what they’re going to cop. That’s when you need to lift them up, offer them some encouragement and just tell them what they need to work on in a calm, measured way.
Yelling at those players when they’re down is not reading the room. It’s just Maguire displaying his ego and he can keep playing hard man all he likes, but he’s just going to keep getting the same output from them.
